Win7 Update hangs
Win7 Update hangs
Tried multiple "fixes" to no avail. Win7 update hangs on downloading update, checking for update. Happens on my T500 Win7 Pro 64 and another T420s same OS. Is this pervasive or am I a step child?
Tried blocking anti-virus, booting with only Windows, backing to restore point. Any other suggestions?

Re: Win7 Update hangs
I much appreciate the link, but it might as well have been written in Greek. The vocabulary and initials for actions fell on deaf ears. I could not fathom even the first sentence. You're dealing with a rank amateur with so little expertise in windowese. "Windows Management Framework (WMF) 4.0" and "domain controller (RODC) in Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1." are meaningless.
But I thank you anyway.

I've yet to try this solution, but I think this may help you.
I sometimes would not be able to update windows, or it would bog the system resources, so I bookmarked it.

Re: Win7 Update hangs
Hi RRHODY,
I just won this fight today on my third machine this month(!)
The link Puppy sent you to is a good place to start. I see you've got Win7 Pro 64 bit, so the direct download link for KB3020369 is:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downloa ... x?id=46817
You would get here if you scrolled down the page Puppy sent you to and found your version of Windows in the "How to obtain this update" section. Because your version in 64 bit, you want 'All supported x64-based versions of Windows 7' (x64 = 64 bit; x86 = 32 bit).
Another download that might help is KB3172605:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downloa ... x?id=53332
This is a July 2016 'rollup' that supersedes a June 2016 'rollup' that included a fix to the Windows Update client (KB3161647, if you're keeping track!)
Anyway, those two did the trick for me. After you've run them, give the WindowsUpdateDiagnostic tool a run and see what it finds. Hopefully just green checkmarks!
Let us know how that goes and if you need any more help--there are other things to try, but let's start here.

Went to the first link KB3020369 and started WINDOWS UPDATE STANDALONE INSTALLER.
Well, it searched for twenty minutes without any results. I gave up; was it too soon?

Yes, you gave up too quickly.RRHODY wrote:... Well, it searched for twenty minutes without any results. I gave up; was it too soon?
I allow an hour for every month that auto-updates were not done.
If the PC was not updated for 6 months, then I allow 6 hours for that first list of updates to appear.
After the first set of updates are installed, the times to get a list of updates will improve considerably.

Yep. It took 15+ hours for first windows 7 update to even find the updates when I installed it on my T60/61. And this was after the update to windows update and some basic troubleshooting. Then another few hours to install.

I needed my non-thinkpad win7 desktop after literally 2 years of not booting it, and windows update stuck at 0% even after leaving it for 12+ hours.
I tried current roll-ups and windows-update-KB-updates and all of them hang at 0% as well. thanks, MSFT.
this is what worked:

Re: Win7 Update hangs
WSUS Offline Update, KB 3020369 and KB 3172605 worked for me on an X60T, Win 7, x86.
Installed the base Win 7 x32 system, then WSUS Offline Update, then both the Knowledge Base Updates.
Started Windows Update, and less than a half-hour later it had found 168 updates. I selectively installed 130 of them and then turned off Windows Update.
This same machine on the last install of W7 x32 with WSUS Update but WITHOUT those 2 KB fixes took over 14 hours to find the same updates.
Definitely two updates to have handy!
Regards.
Dave

Re: Win7 Update hangs
I was at the point where even the Windows-Update-update "fix" was stalled at searching 0% ZOMFG. roll-ups? no better.
wsus-offline needs to run basically like 3 times not to mention it has to download an annoying amount of files from MS. and yet?
IT.
WORKS.

Run three times? Is this typical? Where's a patch from Microsoft?
How can Update be UNINSTALLED, then reinstalled?

Re: Win7 Update hangs
WSUS Offline Installer installs the MS updates in stages and then reboots after each stage. In all the installations I've used it on (about a dozen so far), it usually checks for (and installs if necessary) the Windows Update Installer, the latest Service Pack (if not at Service Pack 1 already), Internet Explorer 11, various Net Framework packages, and then whatever list of updates not already installed. It will usually reboot several times throughout the process, after it installs each of the different sets of packages ( Net Framework, Service Pack 1, etc..)
WSUS does NOT get updates from Microsoft when you are running it from the DVD or Flash drive. The updates it installs are taken from its own internal database of MS updates that is on the installation media, and they are current to the date of the last build of the program. The program is meant to run without any Internet connection at all.... Hence the name "WSUS Offline Installer".
FWIW, I usually uncheck "Verify Installation Media" if I know I have a good burn of the program.... it saves quite a bit of installation time by not having to verify each and every file in its' database.
Hope this helps.
Regards.

Re: Win7 Update hangs
wsus-offline ***DOES*** download/install updates directly from MSFT, it just takes a while to do it.
as olex126 mentioned, it wants to update you to IE11. you have to do that part. it also wants to install the latest update to Windows-Update. you NEED that part. it also wants to install the latest update-rollup. just keep running it until it says everything is cool. for my 2014-carcass, that was 3 times.
I tried LITERALLY all the official MS ways to fix Windows-Update. the update to Windows Update hangs at 0%, thanks MSFT. the April and July roll-ups still stuck at 0%-updating at the end of the day, thanks MSFT.
and then I used wsus-offline and it worked AND THEN I BOUGHT Torsten A BEER 'COS HE EFFING DESERVES IT. lolol.

Re: Win7 Update hangs
I believe the update KB 3172605 is the key to success...did 3x win 7 computers in a row. On average it took them about 5 hrs each after clicking on the -605 update before they asked me to install this update. After installation upon shutdown I got around 20 updates rolling in. Since then (only a couple off days) all working normal. Lets hope it stays like this as I am not even considering moving to win10! You got that Bill?!! Keep your win 10...(Silently asking what I am going to do when support of win 7 is ending!?)
Recently got a taste of IOS as I got myself a Macbook Air...I cannot fail the thing but some of the logic they use, as if they came from another planet. Plus that the OS is closed, not like on windows where you can dive into the register and really make a mess of your computer.

Apparently, the effect of the fixes may be temporary, and new specific updates may need to be installed after every patchday.

Re: Win7 Update hangs
Just as a test I installed Win7 on a new laptop and just put it on the network.
It takes 2-3 days before it spams up all the updates it needs.
During that time the laptop sits at 50% cpu and 66-75% ram trying to sort itself out.
My network at the time was being used but I was monitoring the wireless AP it was on and it doesnt take too much bandwidth.

Re: Win7 Update hangs
I had several machines that absolutely refused to update. I left 2 desktops running on windows update around the clock for 2 days, NADA. Got around it by using WSUS Offline, most likely the only thing that WILL work. I tried every other method that Google and MS could supply. But the others, to my amazement, had updated just like before this W10 fiasco. I can turn on several of my machines and will be notified of updates in as little as 5 minutes. Just today, I updated 8 laptops in less than 90 minutes with the updates available today. I suspected all along that this "FREE" W10 upgrade was to blame. Now that it is all gone, everything is back to pre-W10 speed. I hope the rumors of another round of "FREE" updates is just that, a rumor.

Shoving the regular windows update to the roadside and kick started the WSUS update instead. On this T60p. If this fixes video driver issue, I would be surprised.

Re: Win7 Update hangs
How I love this Forum!! I had to fresh install Windows 7 on two machines this week -- one each for two of my sons as Christmas gifts. Little did I suspect the Windows Update fiasco I would encounter. Spent two days on the first, a W520 for my adult special needs son, before I checked here for the fix. Spent only an hour on the second son's X1 Carbon, going straight to this thread and following step-by-step. Thank you to all who contributed their personal knowledge -- it is a lifesaver for this grandma 'geek wannabe'
