Z61m (9450-GDG) - shuts down after 15 sec

#1 Post by Pokrzept » Wed Feb 08, 2017 5:13 pm

Hello,

I've got some serious problem with an newly acquired titanium-lid Z61m. Every time I do power it on it turns on, passes POST process and start PXE. Few seconds later unit shuts down without any warning. I did replaced memory modules, keyboard, removed peripherial cards (modem, WLAN, palmrest, etc), hdd and ultrabay device but it did not helped. I'm quite puzzled since I do rebuild thinkpads for few years allready and yet somehow I cannot figure out what is wrong with it. Any of you had similiar situation? I'm worried that problem may be related to power supply section - original battery seems to be dead, even if I plug in the 90W PS battery indicator @ the LCD frame stays dark. If I remove battery laptop shuts itself down anyway.

First thing I would try is to check the CPU, the heatsink and cooling fan. Make sure CPU is seated properly and has some freshly applied thermal paste. Check the cooling fan is spinning well and not noisy, and clean it thoroughly from dust on the fins etc; add some thin oil like sewing machine oil to lubricate if necessary (see elsewhere on this forum for details).

Bad USB port or AC adapter would be a couple more things to check.

Small update:
- I did checked all USB ports and they seem to be fine (no broken tabs, damaged/shorted pins);
- I'm pretty sure that my AC adapter is fine aswell, it does work great with other units;
- I have checked the CPU - replaced it with an T2500 removed from one of my T601 frankenpads.

So far no luck, I got this unit for about 10 bucks so not a big loss but still I'd love to see it working.
