USA Warranties in Canada anyone?

#1 Post by Ogg » Sat Jun 18, 2005 3:59 pm

Anyone here with a refurbished TP purchased in Canada, but the TP has an "original" USA warranty? The IBM "autodetect" shows the warranty to be USA and good until Nov'05. Am I stuck with a useless warranty?

I think it depends on where you bought the refurbished thinkpad from. I would call US Thinkpad support to find out for sure whether your thinkpad has international warranty.

AFAIK, ThinkPads' warranties are global, at least my USA-bought X40 was serviced in Finland under that warranty.

You need to autodetect under "International Warranty Service".

Some models can be serviced in Canada, some can't. My 2687D4U is from the States, and Lenovo originally told me they could service it and were supposed to mail me a new part. A week later, the part didn't arrive, and someone from IBM customer service called me and told me my warranty didn't appear to be valid. I could get service in the US, but since this model isn't sold in Canada, it's not serviced here.

If you autodetect for IWS, and you see Canada in the list of countries where you can get support, then score! But otherwise, you may have a little trouble getting service for it. I'm working it out right now from the guy I bought my laptop from.

My friend was just visiting from the UK and he has a UK model ThinkPad. He left it with me to do more traveling, and I was easily able to have IBM US fix parts on it under warranty for him while he is gone.
