I'm tearing down an X60S with a fan error and found that just after removing the keyboard
it runs just fine. It was making a very slight scraping sound and it was probably hitting the
keyboard. There is a very small foam ridge that is crumbling so I'm going to remove it all
then blow out the fan. It looks like the fan might be very slightly bent making it lift up,
so I'm going to try to make it lay flat.
Just wanted to mention this in case anyone else doesn't have to tear down the entire laptop.
There does not seem to be any place to oil the fan so I'll have to buy the part if it comes back.
I also see a Sierra Wireless card in it and am planning to take it and the modem out.
Take a look at our

Re: X60S Fan Error
While you're at it, also remove the wifi card and replace with a half-size card plus half-size adapter like this: https://www.ebay.ie/itm/264441873740
Recommended: Intel 6300N (even if you have only 2 antenna wires), else the 6200N.

Re: X60S Fan Error
Is the antenna on the Sierra card good for anything, I only have 2 wires on the wifi card.
Also, is there any trick for oiling the fan without opening up the HSF? I have the planar
board out but have not opened the HSF.
ALSO wanted to note that the right side of the palm rest on this X60s has a copper RFI
shield stuck to the back. I'd be willing to bet that this helps as a heat spreader also to
keep the peak temp at hot spots lower and spread out the heat more evenly.
I don't remember if the X61s that I tore down has that also - anyone?

Re: X60S Fan Error
Those 2 extra antennas are only good for a WWAN like the Sierra.
6300N can do speeds up to 450Mbps, 6200N 'only' 300Mbps.
Never 'oiled' an X6x fan, so IDK.
But I have seen that shield on both X60 and X61 palmrests.
Presumably it only appears on 2-fan models, but I may be wrong.
