R61i (8932) just got a T8100

#1 Post by onespeedbiker » Fri Sep 13, 2019 10:37 pm

I been thinking about this for a while. My R61i (8932) came with T5250 CPU. I have already upgraded to Windows 7, with an ssd and the Middeton Bios, so I figured a CPU upgrade was next. I found a T8100 on eBay and it arrived today and went in with no problem. There is always that tragic/magic moment when you don't know if your computer will boot when you replace a major component; well it booted with no problem and is indeed peppier than before. What I am amazed by is how much thermo grease is used on these computers; there is often more grease surrounding the surfaces than on them.

Ignorant people just slap on any squirt of paste and take the rest for granted.
Those in the know use no more paste than a dollop the size of 1-2 rice corns max. and spread it nicely and evenly with e.g. a credit card.

But I actually prefer Murphy's from Cork!

I never bother spreading it nicely and evenly. And not every paste is easily spreadable. I just let the heatsink squash it.

I use method #2, but either would certainly work.

I spread it to remove as much excess as possible. Less paste is more efficient heat transfer. I want the minimum paste necessary just to connect the two surfaces.

I was bored today, so I bumped my R61i up to a T8300; something I ordered from China months ago and for $4.00 and forgot about. Any difference? I don't know, certainly not like the upgrade from the T5450 toT8100.
