EM7455 WWAN card in Thinkpads

#1 Post by Whitieiii » Fri Oct 18, 2019 7:40 pm

I'm looking at adding a WWAN card to my ThinkPad and it occurred to me that the EM7455 Lenovo branded card is both more expensive and has less cellular bands (lacks bands 29 and 30) then the Dell branded EM7455 card.. is it possible to use the Dell branded EM7455 in the thinkpad or would the Lenovo BIOS reject it?

I am sure it won't boot, beeping and saying that you have to power down your device and remove the non-whitelisted card from the WWAN port. In order to use any WWAN or Wifi card, even from other brands (eg. remove whitelist for wireless cards) you'll have to flash an open sourced 3rd party bios (like Libreboot or Coreboot). However if you're not experienced in these stuff, I highly don't recommend it, because you may wind up with dead laptop.
