Sterotyping Laptop users (Humor topic)
IBM - Seriousish users(Some of us play games I guess). Doesn't go around saying "OMG UR N0t3 b00ki3 C@NT GAME!!! PWNTZORS N00bi3". Includes Linux users (Not linux "fanboys"). Does show a sign of customizing their laptops to such a new degree hardware wise... And crossing line of warrantys without voiding them
Dell - Usually grandma-grandpas, or the excessively computer illterate "So I li3k n33d a nu comprutr kuz i got liek 50000 maph4x n stuff." Also likes to insult other laptop users for not having "Fireworks in a laptop"
Gateway - Average consumer from what I've seen.
Apple - Either they want a phancy multi media notebook. Or they got it off a fashion magizine. Which ever came first. Oh and the Apple OS fanboys count here. They(Fanboys) hate PCs with all the passion in the world.
"Widescreen" laptops - For the person who thinks "I LIKE 25 INCHES OF SOFABED! GREAT FOR MOVIES!". That or they got a small 12 inch widescreen. Looks horrid in my opinion
Sony - No idea. Never met a Sony user.
HP - Average consumer, likes the "buttons and shiny lights"
Post your own "sterotype" of a laptop user. This is ment to cheer everyone up. No offense to anyone

quite a few sony users in Asia, actually, and they're pretty clued up when it comes to tech. Lots of Fujitsu users as well.
in fact, am seriously thinking of going with Sony after my X40 has had it's day, although depends on what Lenovo has on offer, of course. It'll be hard to switch, that's for sure.

Well, around here, this is what I normally see, it may or may not be accurate where you are.
Newer ThinkPad definitley means corporate. There are few new personal ThinkPads around here.
Well, if you see an older ThinkPad, it can in many cases refer to myself, your average computer user who can't afford something new but most of the time, it means either government or someone who got suckered on eBay.
Panasonic, well, all the Panasonics around here are mounted into cop cars.
Another one is if you see a newer Dell Latitude around here, it's most likely to be a corporate computer. If it's an Inspiron, then the user is likely to be a steriotypical geek (Magic, taped glasses, D&D, pimples, ect), a grandma or a student.
Apples are mainly used by hippies, graphics folks, video folks and some IT folks.

ThinkPad T60: 2GHZ CD T2500, 3gb RAM, 14.1" XGA, 60gb 7k100, Win 7 Ult
Latitude E7250: i5 5300U 2.3ghz, 12gb RAM, 12" 1080p touch, 256gb SSD, Win 10

Around here
Dell (Inspiron) is by far the most common. These are popular in just about every category, photography, video, IT, CS, liberal arts, business, etc. Lots of profs use them too.
Latitudes are less common but are mainly owned by professors and usually they're the very portable models.
The next most common is Apple, and these are usually owned by media students (photo, video, animation, etc) who hold true to their roots. They usually don't know a thing about computers. There are also some IT/network admin students who use them, but they're in the minority. If a prof doesn't have a Dell, they have an Apple.
For what it's worth, tradition in the art/media fields is strong, as is a general lack of knowledge about computers so many have stuck with Mac products assuming they are the best without much interest in the alternatives in spite of plenty of complaints against apple systems over the years. Over the years, to the benefit of the students, some more variety in computer systems has started to appear which is good. Apple no longer owns the media industry and it's important for students to be familiar with both.
Sony is scattered about the departments, and also generally owned by people who don't know a whole lot about computers but want something pretty. One exception being a photo student I knew.
HP/Compaq are popular with people unfamiliar with computers who just want to go to the store and pick something up. They pop up here and there, but mostly in liberal arts and some technical areas.
IBM is fairly rare, and really only common with hardcore computer users who really know they want the best system even if they're going to pay extra for it. I've not seen many, but it's usually a T or an X series. Otherwise as alpha said there's some old thinkpads, but not many either.
Alienware floats around for some hardcore gamers, but they often are fanboys and not too knowledgeable about their hardware.
I never see panasonics except in a couple labs. Not very common but they're owned by people who tend to lug them around in the field.
Acer/Asus are owned mainly by slighty geeky people who want a decent deal on good hardware.

IBM - Corporate types, wealthy students, Linux geeks and people who like nice stuff
Dell - People who know little about computers and think that Dell is the best because they saw a commercial that said so
Toshiba - Used to be engineers, but now its people who shop at superstores and are attracted to flash rather than quality
Compaq - See Toshiba above
HP - Ditto
Apple - Artists, people who care about style, and savvy users who are fed up with viruses, spyware and all of the bullsh*t we have to go through to keep our systems clean

Well that would be my "mean" sterotype
Heres the "less than offensive" edition
Top - High ammonut
Bottom - Low ammount
Dell - H4x0r kiddys with rich parents. Old people. Averagish laptop user (Likes MEGA WIDE SCREEN).
Apple - Consumer who was advised by fashion magizine. Or likes laptop looks. Or your macintosh fanboy
HP+Compaq - Average joe who loves LEDs flashing and giving a passerbyer a sezuire.
Gateway - Ultra average joe
Alienware - I like to burn my lap off please (Seen 8, on peoples laps...)
IBM - Whats that? Myself... A friend. And you guys. Also only people I see with modified laptops
IBM is hated in my community as well (People call it an "overpriced black lunch box thats slow and can't play Halo 2 for XBox or weird littile racing games)
Ah. Well that shows the maturity rating of my area.

complements of urban dictionary
Although having nothing to do with the XPS 2 like navck says, these are kind of like wannabe computer nerds who think they know what they're doing. They don't usually say it, but its a derogatory term aimed at them.h4x0r
Commonly known as a "script kiddie", the work 'h4x0r' implies 'hacker'. People lame enough to use this word are generally not serious hackers, and are most likely using ready-made and easily-found tools on the internet. They generally have little knowledge of the tools that they use or how they work. Usually of little harm, they will probably trojan your computer, steal all of your CD-keys, mess with your email, and steal any online-gaming accounts that you have. They do have some use, as they are commonly found sending AOL pedofiles trojaned software, and then deleting all of their images.
The more serious of this group will spend hours and hours a day scanning the internet for computers that are vulnerable to a security hole. They will then exploit that hole (using some pre-made tool) and use what is known as a 'rootkit' to give them 'root' (or total control) over a computer. This most commonly happens to Linux and Unix computers, although there was a flurry when the Microsoft RPC vulnerability was announced (see slammer worm).

Many of our Dell fanboyz, err, users, would rather have a working laptop without the 'fireworks' option.
The TPs we have - including mine - just ... work. Oh, and I'll see whether my screensaver still has that 'fireworks' animation.
I think it does.

I see all kinds...
Dell, Compaq and HP....knows little...think their machines are great...not bad for the most part, but not as cool as Thinkpads. Somewhat boisterous owners.
Toshiba: Owners have some knowlege but I've seen burnt out screens on these all the time. Owners want me to order the parts and fix these...Toshiba USA won't send parts or deal with me when they find out the machine came from Japan. Most Toshiba laptops have panasonic drives. The girls cry over their broken laptops because there's nothing I can do to help them.
Fujitsu and Sony: More knowlegable owners, but Fujitsu's have weak plugs for the A/C adapter and need fixing (soldering or new board) all the time. Sony's when they break are expensive and can't find parts...no info on how to work on them...you take a chance trying to get them open. Most owners of Sony's regret having them once I educate them and my TP keeps on working through all of their woes. Oh yeah....both of these owners continuously want me to help them upgrade their DVD burners, etc. Hard to do it on some of them. Most of these are stuck with non-crackable Region codes and are a PIA. Fujitsu is more reliable than Sony in my opinion...a better built machine.
NEC: On par with Fujitsu...maybe a bit better really. Owners are usually studious but use their laptop for all kinds of peer-to-peer downloading. Most want larger hard drives or external drives to hook-up. Many of these also have some cool gadgetry...card readers, etc. built in. I don't see many of these broken.
Panasonic: Usually owned by girls. They are flashy and have some cool DVD and built in card-reader stuff but also break suddenly and can't find parts.
Apple/Macs: Owned by quiet types who snub all the rest of the laptop world. These machines don't break much and produce some wonderful graphics and movies, and their owners know it. Others seek the owners out to help them make some type of presentation. The owners get to "quietly show-off."
Sotec: Budget Korean Sony wannabee, but maybe flashier...red keyboards, etc. They break as soon as their short warranty period is over. I suppose these are disposable laptops. There are a few other Korean and Chinese brands like Sotec, but this is the one I see most often. Most owners of this and the other budget machines treat their other belongings as if they live in a "throw-away" world. If it breaks, get another cheap, new one...no sense in buying quality. These folks keep up with new technology because they can.
Thinkpads: Seen infrequently....but owned by those in-the-know. Most of my teachers own them because our school has purchased these exclusively. I like that because we know what we're getting and we have very little down time. Student owners are usually quiet and studious....usually wanting newer and more modern Thinkpads...If a Thinkpad breaks it can be repaired by the user or with my help.
I work at a boarding school for Japanese High School kids...thus the strange analogies.

Interesting ones, there, MadeInJapan. Never seen a Panasonic laptop, myself.
IBM: Poor person wanting a good used laptop, and/or someone looking for the best QUALITY laptop (myself, I'm both). Usually someone in the know.
Dell: Poor person wanting a newer laptop, some clueless n00b wanting "t3h b357 64m1n6 l4p70p", someone in school (have you seen how [censored] MANY Dells are in colleges? - Dell's the new Apple, for crying out loud! Both my HS and my college use exclusively Dell...)
HP/Compaq: I am stupid.
eMachines:
M68xx owners: I am actually smart, because I found the cheap, decent quality A64 laptop. However, I have severe back problems.
Everybody else: See HPaq.
Averatec (formerly known as Sotec, FWIW): I'm REALLY cheap and want a decent-looking ultraportable (but don't know that black actually looks good, and I'll get much better mileage out of a used X series with UltraBase).
Apple: I am a snob. Go hug a tree with me.

Heres a nice quote from a person who wants a XPS Gen 2 but doesn't have one
XGothicSerpentX: XPS > Crappy thing
Fortenraven: Meh
Fortenraven: I have an IBM laptop
Fortenraven: You call it crappy?
Fortenraven: Try having titanium slap your head.
Fortenraven: XPS Gen 2 - Bullet goes through, kills you
Fortenraven: IBM T43 - Stops bullet in laptop. Doesn't set lap on fire, has more than ****ity "45 minute idle time"
Fortenraven: PS ICQ 102443974
Fortenraven: ICQ user, ask him about XPS Gen 2
Fortenraven: Who needs widescreen
Fortenraven: Unless you watch HD-TV with it expanded 200% on your laptop
XGothicSerpentX: Which one has more functionality?
XGothicSerpentX: XPS
XGothicSerpentX: Therefore, you're wrong
Fortenraven: T43
Fortenraven: Now now, talk to that ICQ user first
XGothicSerpentX: No, mother ****er
Fortenraven: Yes
XGothicSerpentX: No, *****
Fortenraven: No
XGothicSerpentX: **** off
Fortenraven: PS. T43 is stronger, more durable, security chip, able to detect a fall and stop its harddrive, keyboard light. Which is more functional now?
XGothicSerpentX: Look
XGothicSerpentX: You don't realize that the XPS is the fastest lap top ever tested by PC gaming world. Thusly it kicks the **** out of your T43 or whatever *** piece of **** you call it ***lord.
Fortenraven: So?
Fortenraven: Fast =/= Battery life
XGothicSerpentX: Battery Life =/= everything. ITS POWER LOSER
Fortenraven: I also can drop my laptop, and it will be fine
Fortenraven: Can that XPS be dropped, then stepped on
Fortenraven: And still work?
XGothicSerpentX: Who is dumb enough to first off drop it and second off step on it?
XGothicSerpentX: You mean yourself right Navck? When you're being ****ed in jail? I'll see your *** in jail getting ****ed
XGothicSerpentX signed off at 7:37:07 PM.
Well... I'm 14, hes 16. Whos more mature here now.
PS - My laptops feelings were hurt from him.
Edit:Note the ICQ number is for a fellow TP owner. I guess he refuses to, because he wants to win this.
Note offensive language usage.
PS - This guy also used a few racial slurs againist me after he unignored me to spam, didn't save that conversation anyways.

Here's a new one from watching Nav
IBM - knows they have a great laptop and expects everyone else to judge laptops by the same metrics the IBM user does. If they don't they obviously don't know anything. Doesn't see that other laptops including widscreen gaming systems big or small have legitimate reason to exist in the market because they can perform some task the thinkpad cannot.
Also, the IBM user thinks their laptop would stop a bullet, continue to run flawlessly for the next two hours and finish their thesis for them.

X31, T43p (on sale soon I think
), T400
Those would be the ELITIST ThinkPad owners.
I'm not sure that I would buy a widescreen ThinkPad, but I could see a use for them.
I know mine can't stop a bullet. I'm not going to be in any gang wars anytime soon, though, so who cares?
As for ot14's comment, I'll stick by my HPaq stereotype, due to quality and service (it's bad when eMachines has better quality than HPaq, isn't it?)

You're right, I was just thinking that I forgot to put elitist in there.bhtooefr wrote:Those would be the ELITIST ThinkPad owners.

My school just signed contracts and started a policy requiring all students who will be graduating in 2008 and beyond to buy either a Dell or an Apple. (Thankfully I graduate in 2006
)
Dell: Dad has heard the name and therefore is willing to spend money on the "known, stable entity" as opposed to the "wiley young unproven, flashy thing."
Apple: Buys a computer according to what Cosmo or InStyle or other trendy fashion mag says. One word: Trendy. Some do actually buy it because they realize it has better build quality than the Dell. (Generally what I recommend to those who have to make the choice.) I am kinda curious what happens when the people who choose computers just to be out of the mainstream realize, that well, their choice really isn't all that counter-culture...
IBM: Me. oh, and one girl who has an X40 (school of about 2400). Poor girl graduates in 2008 though, so she has to buy a Dell or Apple. Hopefully I'll be able to get back to my snobby-geek linux soon (darn work programs). I'll admit to being snobby if someone asks why I just have "an old black laptop..." In the mean time, the CIO of our university (and the Dell service tech.) have become very accustomed to me walking around with my Thinkpad. Hey, the Dell I am issued for my honors program is great -- everyone should have a dedicated email checker in the kitchen...

You know, does she actually have to USE the Dell (as in, is merely owning it OK)?
And, how new does this Dell have to be?
If it has to be new, and she doesn't actually have to use it, I'd suggest whatever the cheapest Inspiron 1200 config is. Probably a Celeron M 350, 256MB RAM, a 30GB HDD, a 14.1" TFT, and no wireless.
I'm glad that my college (Central Ohio Technical College) doesn't require that one have a Dell or Apple (hell, they don't even require a COMPUTER). Granted, they've got contracts with Dell and Apple, but their students are going to get the cheapest used laptop they can get their hands on, so a contract like what you describe wouldn't work. Ironically, when they first put their WiFi network in, it used a VPN program that they only had the Windows version of - yet, they had contracts with Apple for discounts on their laptops! (I HATED that thing, mainly because I was trying to migrate away from Windows, and couldn't with that...)
As for my high school, it's Dell mania (OMG, you've got a Dell! Cool! (I actually got that all the time when I was lugging an Inspiron 1100 around everywhere... That model was NOT my choice...)). All of the staff (except one who's left the school) use Dell laptops (assigned by the school). The one used a T40 that she got from her college. As for my friends, I'm the only one with a laptop now. A friend of mine had been borrowing an old Toshiba laptop that I have, and one of my classmates had an identical Inspiron 1100 (except the RAM hadn't been upgraded on it).
Heck, some of my friends don't have computers at all, and most don't have Internet access (RFC 1149, anyone?) - including this one girl that I'm interested in, and the only safe way to contact her is via e-mail (horribly slow - she only gets into the library often enough to keep her Hotmail account from deactivating).</rant>

Hmm... I need to get a BGates voodoo doll, don't I?
I started with an old Apple //c, after all... And, I really don't care for MS now... (as in, XP is my last Windows version - everything else will be Linux)
However, if it weren't for BGates, the A2 community would have had to wait even longer for floating point in BASIC - there was a project to retrofit Woz BASIC for FP, but it was taking too long (kinda funny, considering Woz BASIC was actually DESIGNED to be extended like that, unlike MS BASIC).
Edit: Yeah, I do play games on this thing. However, it's older stuff like UT:GOTY (hint for all of those with a Rage Mobility M with 4MB VRAM (not the M1, which is the same thing with 8MB VRAM): use the software renderer. You're wasting your time with DirectX.)
However, I was looking for a solid laptop that would do everything I NEEDED (not wanted), was VERY portable, and was VERY cheap. I got it.
