X200 overclock from chinese forums

#1 Post by tottoroo » Sat Oct 10, 2020 9:43 pm

I'm looking for some info about how to overclock an X200.

I couldn't find much, actually only a post* on this forum about a 3Ghz OC X200 for sale, which seemed to be from China. So I'm assuming they have a thread about how to do it somewhere...?
(*Thread here: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=130492 )

If anybody has some info on it, please let me know. Willing to risk a P8400 board I already have liquid metal on, to try it out.

That particular X200 appears to be overclocked via a simple phase-locked loop modification. This is just my guess, though. I don't know if this is exactly what he did, but considering the jump in clock speed (266.666 MHz x 9 = 2.4 GHz > 333.333 MHz x 9 = 2.99 GHz), it could be possible.

Just wanted to thank you for the swift reply :) Interesting link!

Will look more into the translation and the images - I have a cheap soldering station and horrible soldering skills, but maybe those will be enough provided I can figure out what he's talking about.

EDIT: So, thanks to the title from the link I got this from Baidu:

https://forum.51nb.com/thread-1516974-1-1.html

It seems a little hard mostly because:
(A) the automatic translation makes it confusing to understand whether the guy's talking about the X200 or X200s, or the X61/s, as he jumps from one to the other in his explanation
(B) he's soldering in really tiny spots

I repeated this mod a couple years ago, based off the pictures linked above. I used a P8600 board, but I couldn't get it stable. After soldering in the modwire speedstep would allow 1.0ghz, 2.0ghz, or 3.0ghz. Mine only works with a single RAM slot populated, even after modifying the RAM SPD using Typhoon Burner. The second RAM slot is always unstable and Memtest86 crashes if it is populated. I'd rather have 8gb of dual-channel RAM and a 2.4Ghz CPU than 4gb of single-channel RAM with a 3.0Ghz CPU.

I don't know what else to try to get it stable.
