Any T-Series owners who switched from the X-Series?

#1 Post by campobello » Tue Jul 12, 2005 3:56 pm

I was curious to find any of you who have had a T vs. X dilemma, which laptop you finally chose and your personal experience thus far.

Thanks much

We have an X30 user who now wants a notebook with a built-in optical drive. I'm planning to get her a T42 2373K9U & mini-dock. Will report back with our impressions.

I returned my T43 for an X41. If you have a nice desktop, I would suggest it. If you don't, then get the T4x. The X series is not meant to be your only computer, while the T series is.

Think about how often you use a CD-ROM drive, because that is one of the most important differences. Actually, record, for a week, how often you use the CD-ROM drive in your desktop. I found that I hardly used my cd-rom.

Other differences are:
1.) Trackpad on T series vs Trackpoint only on X series.
2.) Full sized keyboard on T series vs X series which is 97 percent of T series size (yes, 3 percent makes a difference!!)

Who can "stand the trackpad"????
That would be people that prefer them, of which I am one of them.

This was not intended to be a "trackpad vs trackpoint" thread.
The T series gives you the choice of both, that is one thing that I like about it.

X vs T

#8 Post by v_parthi » Fri Jul 15, 2005 3:45 am

Very important:

T4x has a faster HDD either 5400 rpm or 7200rpm, but X models have 4200rpm HDD which makes a big performance difference. If you are frequent flier who gives presentations here and there, and put the laptop idle and use only your desktop at home/office, then you can buy X4x.

But, T4x is good enough with lots of features and around 0.5 kg more than X models. The question is:

* Do you mind carrying extra 0.5 kg sacrificing all extra features? If yes, get X. Otherwise, T is one of the best laptops with a very good build quality.

Sorry I was being P.I. here. But you brought up the subject in the first place about what an X model user would be missing (the trackpad). My point was, that IMHO that X model user wouldn't be missing much by not having a trackpad (which I believe is on topic). Obviously my opinion about this doesn't jive with all thinkpad users (as I'm finding out here). And hey, like you said, isn't it great that the T series gives you the choice of both. That way at least, all the T series users are happy.

No problem.
I often wish that the trackpoint had been the first pointing device that I had ever used.
It works great, I just can't get used to it.

Advice - set the sensitivity has high as possible, and put the pointer speed fairly high (higher than default, anyway).

When you can easily whip the pointer across the screen at a light touch, that will be the correct speed.

Use it like that until you get the hang of it, and then drop it down a touch on the Windows mouse pointer speed (very important if you actually do use a mouse with it). That's how I learned to handle a pointing stick back when I used my old Toshiba.

My pointer speed right now is at 8 of 11 notches (default is 6 of 11), my stick sensitivity is full "Light Touch". You'll want to be at 9 or 10 notches on pointer speed.

Continuing on bhtooefr advice, set also the "Enhanced pointer precision" to off (unchecked") on the 'Pointer Options'

May I add how disappointed I am that this thread which topic states clearly that a comment is requested from people who had an X and switched to the T is answered by just about anyone who have an opinion about the subject, and not by people with first hand experience as requested.

That is all great advice.
I appreciate it, but I "grew up" on the trackpad, so I am very unlikely to change. That is why I like the T series, because it also has one.

When I am not busy sometime, I will try the trackpoint using the settings you outlined.

However, the chances of my changing over to it are very slim at this point.

And now, back to our topic:

Hi!

I switched from my X40.

X40 is a very slow machine. The HDD speed is a joke. 1.8" 4200 rpm is the worst drive I've ever seen. There is an annoying sound came from the hdd. It is not OS dependent. Every 10-20s came a seeking sound from the hdd. It is not a fault. My drive was changed in warranty but the new drive has the problem too.

I had 2386-H6G
1.4LV dothan, 512, 40, wlan, bt, docking station with CDRW/DVD.

The screen was better than any T series I've seen. I had T42 with flexview IPS screen, but on the X40 there was a lighter and wery crisp display. I loved it, but it was small for me, I had headache after 3 hours of work on it. Battery time is about 2-3 hour on 4 cell battery, and 5-10 hour on 8 cell battery.

In my opinion you should buy a T42, because i had some inconvenience about the missing optical drive. In the T42 there is an optical drive and it will be with you (not in the docking station).

You cannot change the hdd in x40, because there is no bigger drives in 1.8" size (what is compatible with X40). I hate the trackpoint too. On the X40 there is only Trackpoint (no touchpad).

If you want a small and compact machine, then X40 will be your friend! If you want an expandable and more powered (desktop performance) computer, you should buy a T4x!

I switched indirectly. I had an X21 that I really liked, but got fed-up with the viruses and spyware about two years ago and bought a 12" PowerBook instead. Once I had the PowerBook, which was about the same size as the X21, I really appreciated having the optical drive built-in, and so when it came time to buy another Wintel PC, the T42p was at the top of my list.

I do still love the old X-series though, and after setting up an X20 for a friend, will probably buy my self an old X21 or X22 (I want internal wifi).

I haven't switched, per se, but I have a T30 and my sister has an X40. She loves the portability and size of the lapto. As a college student, she mainly uses it for e-mail, Word, PowerPoint, internet, and listening to a few song files. She finds it perfectly adequate for her needs, and since she's a smaller girl really appreciates the small footprint and lightweight.

Now, I have a T30 and have thought of upgrading to either a new X or T series, and have decided to stick with the T series (when I can finally afford the new upgrade...[censored] gas prices), for a few reasons.

One, you do pay a slight premium on the X series by the time you get a model with the UltraBase and an optical drive and everything, compared to a roughly equivalent T (yes, apples/oranges, but you get the idea).

Two, although I very, very rarely use the optical drive, it's almost inevitable that when I do need it I'm traveling on the road somewhere, meaning with an X I'd be stuck lugging the UltraBase around with me all the time.

Three, while I love the 12" screen on the X series, if I'm tired I find it hard to read without my glasses on, whereas the 14.1" XGA on the T is fine for me.

Hope this helped...

The X3x series use standard drives.

Interestingly enough, the X40 hard drive isn't very slow at all. The only time I can notice the slowness is during the startup process. Other than that, everything functions quickly and efficiently. Btw, the 60GB hard drive seems to be slightly faster than the 40GB..
