Buying a T43 with a dim screen - what am I getting into?

#1 Post by kyonthinkpad » Mon Aug 05, 2024 4:12 am

Hi everyone,

I am considering buying a used IBM ThinkPad T43 laptop, but the seller mentions that it's screen is barely visible. I have noticed that many of the listings for IBM era laptops have a dim screen issue. The screen goes dark right after the IBM logo shows.

I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this issue and can provide some insight into what might be causing it.

I've read some threads on this forum where people have mentioned that the inverter might be the culprit.

If it's a simple inverter fix, I'd be happy to take on the challenge. But if it's a more complicated problem, I'd rather not bother.

Can anyone provide some guidance on what I might be getting into? Any advice or suggestions would be really appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help! :-)

From my experience with older laptops (though not as extensive as many veterans in this forum), a CCFL backlight that lights up at the start then turns off after a few seconds is one of the signs that the CCFL itself is dying.

You can replace just the bulb, which is more cost effective, but tends to be a laborious and frustrating job for most people. Swapping the screen is easier, but more pricey. If you're paying for this, given that the T43 is old, I would think one with a working screen would't be that much more, but I don't know the market in Bangalore that well.

Thank you everyone for your feedback.

After a quick check on a few websites selling CCFLs here, I have found that finding the right dimensions is unlikely. Moreover, ordering parts from overseas would be cost-prohibitive, as the cost is comparable to the laptop's price itself.

In light of this, I've decided to skip buying this specific T43. I may use the marketplace here if I don't find a suitable alternative elsewhere.

Thank you again for your advice.

I've replaced the CCFL of a 12.1" screen from an X61, used a cracked LCD as a donor and transplanted the lamp to the dim screen. Doable but not fun.
