ThinkPad T60 LED backlit screen replacement
I have a CCFL backlit 14" XGA TN panel. I am fine with this screen, the viewing angles aren't that bad, I don't mind the resolution. The only thing is it doesn't get very bright, and the whites look off white. Can I do a drop in replacement that is LED backlit, and what is the FRU?
Re: ThinkPad T60 LED backlit screen replacement
There is no OEM or otherwise directly compatible LED backlit screen replacement for T60. The closest thing that comes to it is a 15" HV150UX2-100 with a modded inverter board to supply power to the LED driver on the display panel, as it is LED backlit from factory. But the screens were never originally intended to go into T60 or any Thinkpad for that matter, and they're quite rare and expensive/difficult to source. There's plenty of ads on ebay and Aliexpress that have them, but there's no guarantee you'll get an absolutely flawless one as a portion of the ones on sale now are likely rejects from earlier batches- passed down to the next party willing to sell them. Even if you did get one, you'd have to mod the inverter or ask around to see if someone's willing to do it.
The other option is to have your existing panel LED modded. That would still require sourcing an LED bulb and kit to mod the inverter to drive it, and properly control brightness level. I'm not aware of a good source of such kits or bulbs, someone else might have to post about that if there is a good source somewhere still selling such kits or bulbs.
Otherwise- you could just swap in a new CCFL bulb, which I believe still can be sourced. A bulb swap on a panel though is far from easy. There's guides and walkthroughs showing you the procedure, but there's all sorts of things that can go wrong such as cracking the new bulb, damaging the display or any of the films/layers, bending the thin metal frame the panel sits in, or even allowing a bit of grime/dirt/dust in between any of the films to get trapped forever in the panel after you reassemble it, prompting you to disassemble it again. Even if the swap goes smoothly, you have to reassemble the panel carefully to make sure there's no uneven pressure or misalignment, so the light and colors are even, and there's no backlight bleed.
Not trying to bum you out- LED modded panels are super sought after on here. I've got an LED Thinkpad T60/61 Frankie myself. But it is a rough mod, and even if you're willing to spend a bit of money your options are limited.

also be aware of laws governing proper disposal of CCFL tube as it contains mercury.
