Thinkpad x41 boot problem

#1 Post by teamde78 » Thu May 08, 2025 9:38 am

Looking for some advice - I pulled out the old Thinkpad x41 I had laying around in storage it has a CF to ide adapter with a 32gb CF card installed. It previously had Win XP Home Edition from the previous owner (not activated) but trying to make use of the product key still on the bottom of the unit.

After grabbing the Win XP ISO off internet archive, I keep getting "A disk read error occurred" - Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart.

I tried different ISOs, ensured the adapter is installed correctly, formatted the CF on another PC, ran chkdsk & bootcfg in recovery mode off the iso - and still the same issue.

Anything need to be done on the BIOs side, or any other suggestions to try and troubleshoot?

Well turns out after more troubleshooting that I should have heeded the warnings from the Internet to not use Rufus. Working perfectly now with winsetupfromusb 8)
