Typing and Mouse/Cursor Delayed Response...

#1 Post by Conmee » Fri Jun 25, 2004 8:52 pm

Folks,

Not sure if this is the correct forum for this question, but looks like everything else and the kitchen sink is in here... lol ;)

As I type or move the cursor to highlight/select items (particularly apparent in IE), the cursor lags in its response... also, as I'm typing this post, at seemingly random times, the text doesn't keep up with my typing and after a delay the rest of the text or letters appear...

Anyone encounter a problem like this? I think it might have something to do with the Accessibility features, the anti-spyware, Norton Internet Security, Spybot, Webroot, etc...

I may just restore the factory install and add one app at a time until the problem is recreated...

Daniel.

Whenever I have this problem, I can usually check Norton System Works and see the CPU at 100% or near.

Something is using your CPU besides your typing.

If your Antivirus or Spyware are constantly searching, they may be using all your resources. Try disabling the instant scans from each and see if that makes things work better.

Or you could have a rogue program that won't go away even though you shut it down. One way to test this is to shut down the laptop and see if the sluggishness remains when you restart.

Another cause could be insufficient memory for all the programs you are trying to run at once. See if the sluggishness stays even when you run only one thing at a time (with all the TSR's active). If you are running Windows XP with less than 256MB, or Windows 98 with less than 64MB, you are asking for trouble.

Hope this helps.

Bruce,

Thanks for trying, but I need something a little more technical in nature. :) As you might have guessed from my signature, I own a brand new T42p with WinXP Pro and 1GB of RAM... so I think we can eliminate the RAM limitations, not to mention the Win95/98/ME/2K issues as well. lol

Actually, I had already disabled Spybot, Webroot Spy Sweeper, and Norton AV and Personal Firewall to no success. Nevertheless, I managed to discover that it has something to do with Norton System Works (A/V, Internet Security, ad blocking, etc), IBM Security client, and Rapid Restore. Seems if I uninstalled either I didn't seem to have the problem. However, I've run into other problems with installing Norton Internet Security... if I don't set IIS and Message Queing services to manual, the Norton Internet Security program hangs my system on logon, and when I have all the Norton updates and it recognizes all my Internet apps, it still seems to slow my initial logon and initial web access.

To make a long story short, I've installed McAfee Internet Suite instead and my system boots faster and it doesn't hang when a new Internet-enabled app tries to access the Internet (I just hope it catches everything and isn't cutting corners... lol). I'm sure I could narrow down what the problem is (most likely the IBM software, as my T40p used Norton System Works and Internet Security without a hitch, but I didn't have the IBM Security or Rapid Restore apps loaded), but I'm more interested in getting some use out of my new T42p for awhile before I start the whole image/test/format/restore/image/test/format/restore spiral of death.... lol
