Leaving the T43p for X41 Tablet

I need to use my laptop more and more out in the field and find it would really be handy to be able to walk and use my ThinkPad at the same time.

My company rehabs apartments and converts them to condo in Jacksonville FLorida. I track progress with multiple Excel spreadsheets and track progress. I have written this down and then moved to my laptop to print reports for both me and the property management company that I work for.

I am hoping the X41 tablet will allow me to walk, inspect and record data while I am walking. I am really interested in the performance difference I will experience going from the T43p to the X41 Tablet. Others programs I use is the MS Office Suite, AutocAD (2D) and PhotoShop.

I think that PhotoShop CS will be the most chalenge for the X41 tablet. It runs pretty good on my T43p and am hoping to simular results on the X41 tablet.

I am looking at the model 18666SU.

Any opinions whole be helpful

I did the same thing as you too. i got the 2668-Q2U, but realized that the 1666-6SU is much more intuitive for my need. I have not looked back since then. The x41T has incredible. battery life lasts me 6.5 hours, only 4 pounds, the screen is much brighter than the T43P. As far as Photoshop goes, I use Adobe Creative Suite 2 (CS2), and it loads perfectly with all the applications, including, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, GoLive, Acrobat, Bridge, etc, and many times I open them simultaneously, and they seem to be working just fine like my desktop does. As long as you update your RAM to 1.5 GB instead of the usual 512 onboard RAM that the manufacture came with. The only thing you are going to experience different is that X41T is using 1.8" form factor hard drive which runs only at 4200 RPM, the same type of hard drive that is used in IPOD, and other MP3 players, therefore your booting up time for the X41T is noticably slower than T43P. Once it's completly boot up you won't feel much of a difference between the T43P and X41T as far as using non 3D intensive applications, such as Photoshop, Microsoft Office, etc... As far as AutoCAD goes i don't think x41T can handle it well because it's a 3D intensive application, and X41T is not designed for such applications. I think T43p suits for that type of applications much better.

My suggestion for you is once you got the X41T is format your hard drive, make a boot up CD of Windows Tablet from your X41T that your computer came with, and install it fresh. Once you have installed windows install IBM software update and it will search for all the necessary drivers for you without have to install all the drivers yourself manually. What I did was that I only install drivers and softwares of IBM that indicated as Mandatory and Required. Any softwares that indicated Recommend, I don't install. Because those softwares really slow down your computer during boot up. I hope this helps . Good Luck.

Well, you won't get anywhere near 6.5 hours with the screen turned to bright, will you??

I know how to make the restore CD's, but how to you make a "boot up CD of Windows Tablet" Edition ???
I want to do this. Please explain how.

Battery lasts 6.5 hours with 8 cell battery you have to set everything at minimum setting. If you set at maximum brightness you probably get 5 hours at most. You can also add another 2 hours of your usage time, if you use extended battery which attaches onto the bottom of the notebook.

As far as "How to make a boot up CD of Windows Tablet Edition" from your notebook that came with windows preinstalled, you can go to the link below, and it will show you step by step of how to do it. The site shows you how to make a boot up cd from Windows XP Professional. I can imagine that Windows Tablet Edition would follow in the similar format as well.

You had posted above as if you had done this (clean install) but it doesn't sound like you have, if you say that you "can imagine that Windows Tablet Edition would follow in the similar format as well"??????
You also said that you then proceded to install just the drivers that were listed as required.

Did you do this (clean install) or didn't you? If you did, please tell me how to do it.

The instructions at the link below (even for me) are darned complicated.

You know there is a saying "no pain, no gain". Yes indeed the instruction in that link that I gave is extremely specific of how to make your own boot up CD of windows that has been preinstalled in your IBM laptop. It shows you how to do it from start to finish including of how to install all the IBM drivers and softwares that are mandatory and required. It is not complicate at all by all mean. All you have to do is take some time out and read the instruction step by step patiently, and it will show you how to do it step by step. Even a 15 year old can do it. The instruction is so precisely clear and specific, that if you read it carefully and follow it step by step as it is instructed along the way, you will be able to do it.

Yes indeed i did do exactly what it said, and yes I did install windows tablet edition from scatch with boot up cd that i made by following the instruction that is given in the website, and it works wondefully.

As far as showing you how to do it. The instructions that are given in the website are so precisely well written that I don't think I can be able to do it better than what's already given.
