Do I need a new power adapter?

#1 Post by budder » Wed Jun 30, 2004 5:12 pm

I "recently" (a month ago) bought an X40 from my uncle, who works for IBM. I received it yesterday. Now, he works out of the Hong Kong office, and while I realized that this meant that I would be getting XP Home (yes, very strange), I didn't realize that I would get a plug for HK outlets. This gives me a problem, as I live in Houston, which is a little unlike HK, especially WRT the shape of power plugs.

So, I called IBM today and they pretty much gave me the runaround, not doing anything. There are two things I want to know:

Can I buy a shape changer and use the system as it is now?
If I buy a spare charger (one for home, one for on the go), will the regular 55w IBM travel charger work?

I think the answer to both questions is a yes, but I'm unsure and don't want to make a stupid mistake. It's really frustrating getting a new computer and not beign able to use it, added to the fact that I bought IBM because of the great  support. Currently, my uncle is out of his office and unreachable (till 7/9), so I can't check and see if he got me an international warranty without another too-long wait through IBM's CS system.

The solution is very simple. The adapter that comes with your X40 can be used worldwide. You only need a plug converter (radioshack.com). But the simpliest way is to call IBM, and order a US power cord. When you are in HK you just need to switch the power cord.

Or just go down to the nearest Radio Shack and get a $2.99 cord. Just take you HK cord with you and get one with the right end on it.
It is probably not the "right thing to do" but it should work.
