HITACHI 100 GB 7200 RPM IN STOCK
HITACHI 100 GB 7200 RPM IN STOCK
I found Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 with 100 GB 7200 RPM that sales online. I wonder if I stick it into T series notebook that it would give me any error message, or do I have to buy the drive from IBM to avoid that error message.

anyone seen a review of the 100gb 7K100?
I found article comparing the seagate 100gb 7200.1 to the 7K60:

ok, that review is somewhat crappy.
Since when is there a Seagate 7k100? AFAIK seagate uses a XXX.X notation for disk models lately, hence it's 7200.1 Hitachi uses XKXXx aka 7k100.
Considering the review uses them interchangably, making me wonder what drive they actually tested... I'd question how accurate the data is. Sad, that used to be a good site.

For raw performance, 7K100 80 GB is ~8 % faster than 7K60.ddutta wrote:At that price point, I would rather buy the 80GB for $200 right now and upgrade later.
The 7K100 100 GB is ~21 % faster than the 7K60.
I'd say the 100 GB version is the next generation drive, while the 80 GB version is generationally similar to 7K60.

I tried the seagate 5400 RPM... not a bad drive, just operated a bit warmer than a drive of that speed should. And that was only 5400RPM.
IMHO the warranty is the big plus in seagates.
But my Hitachi 7k60 seems to be cooler. I'd expect the 7k100 to be following that tradition (though have not seen one yet).

Will it Work?
I've ordered a Hitachi 7K100 from ZipZoomFly for my T43p. Does anyone know if the drive will work as delivered or can be flashed with IBM firmware?

Re: Will it Work?
Bill (at thinkpads.com) didn't have any luck flashing a 7K100 drive he bought. check his post at this thread:JWadle wrote:I've ordered a Hitachi 7K100 from ZipZoomFly for my T43p. Does anyone know if the drive will work as delivered or can be flashed with IBM firmware?

Re: Will it Work?
I see that Bill says he got the 2010 error on a T43p with the Travelstar 7K100, but I see no mention of trying to flash the firmware with the IBM version.hoya wrote:Bill (at thinkpads.com) didn't have any luck flashing a 7K100 drive he bought. check his post at this thread:JWadle wrote:I've ordered a Hitachi 7K100 from ZipZoomFly for my T43p. here is a decent review which includes the toshiba:
http://www.mobilityguru.com/2004/12/13/ ... age15.html
sustained max transfer rates for that Toshiba drive hover around 35.4 mb/s, and on the 100gb 7K100 I'm seeing 53.6mb/s. yes, it feels about that much faster, too. going from the 60gb 7K60 to the 100gb 7K100 reminds me of going from 4200rpm to 7200rpm. it's dramatic and I noticed the price just dropped yet again - the 100gb 7K100 was going for $300 at the beginning of the month, and today it's $206 in-stock. of course, the SATA version of the 80gb 7K100 is only $119, so I anticipate that prices will fall once again.

Hitachi 7K100 Error?
It appears (i.e. I haven't seen any posting to the contrary) that the Hitachi 7K100 still produces the 2010 error on a T43p, and that the recent firmware upgrades from IBM do not solve this problem.
If so, how are those of you who have bought this drive using it? Ignoring the error? Patching the firmware?

Re: Hitachi 7K100 Error?
AFAIK, there is no way to flash the firmware on a non-IBM option 7K100. I got the 2010 boot error (with two very annoying beeps), but no problems to report. the Tech at Hitachi said he's yet to hear of anyone having a problem with the 7K100 on the T43 (aside from the Bios error, which he called 'cosmetic' and I call ANNOYING).JWadle wrote:It appears (i.e. I haven't seen any posting to the contrary) that the Hitachi 7K100 still produces the 2010 error on a T43p, and that the recent firmware upgrades from IBM do not solve this problem.

i don't think the price will drop that much. the SATA has always been cheaper, and has always been instock also. the thing is, there's not very much demand for the sata version, that's why it is so cheap.

Re: it's $206 at this other place
Thanks for the information! It's going for $206.60 right now and they appear to have a couple hundred of these drives in stock. I just ordered one.mamamia wrote:http://www.costcentral.com/proddetail/H ... 15/G68346/
