Jerky Mouse/Video Problem **FIXED**

#1 Post by paul_1011 » Mon Oct 10, 2005 8:38 am

Having been suffering with this issue for some time now and getting increasingly annoyed with it, along with few other members of this forum.

I am happy to say I have fixed this problem on my laptop, hopefully the same procedure will work for other affected machines. Another benefit is that you get the performance back that you forgot you had! My T43 is now much faster than it has been in recent weeks. :D

Take a look at : http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=817472

Note the symptoms:
After you suspending and resume your computer several times, hard disk performance may be reduced. If you use Device Manager to view the properties of the IDE channel towhich the drive is connected, the Advanced Settings tab may show that the current transfer mode for the drive is "PIO Mode."
I use standby on my machine all the time, this might explain why many users have not seen the problem. Upon checking the transfer mode of my drive it was indeed running in "PIO Mode". Uninstalling the drive controller and rebooting a couple of times has restored it to "Ultra DMA Mode 5".

Laptop is now running beautifully again. I realise this could happen to any laptop and is not only T4x series that might get the problem. But I do hope this information helps some of the other users that were getting the problem.

paul, thank you so much! I think the problem is completely gone now. I'm just curious though, what led you to that microsoft help/support site? Also, did you edit the registry or did you just let it be? Thanks again......

I ended up at the Microsoft site from a google search, I didnt activley go there(though I often do for other things).

I could see that when my thinkpad was idle but "jerking" that the hard disk light would flash for a moment at the same time as the jerk. I started searching around for problems with hard disks and mice and eventually ended up there.

I left the registry as is for now and I if the problem comes back I will think about editing it then.

So glad its fixed your problem, is your machine also faster now?

yeah, i think i'm going to leave the registry alone too unless the problem comes back.

I have also found that my t43 is now a lot faster than what it's been like. What used to take microsoft word about 30 sec. to open now takes about 3 sec.. Overall, this fix speeded up my machine to what it was like before this problem started occuring, which is a big plus
