Having back R&R Partition

#1 Post by A-Ge0 » Sat Oct 22, 2005 1:16 pm

i have deleted my R&R and reclaimed the space. I changed my mind though.
Is there any way to have IBM Partiotion in my disk again?

If you created the Recovery Disc set before you deleted the hidden partition, you can restore everything with this set of CD's. You will delete everything on the hard drive though, when you do the restore, so make a backup first of anything you want to save. After the recovery, your laptop will be just like it was when it was brand new.

If you don't have the Recovery Disc set, you can buy them from IBM/Lenovo for about $50 US.

fortunately i have another thinkpad with R&R3 working.
I tried to make the recovery CDs but i neither have cdrw nor external hdd.
Is there a way to burn these cds through my LAN on a desktop's computer dvd/rw?

I don't know. But be aware that the software only allows you to burn one copy of the Recovery Disc set. If you try again it won't let you. So be sure and use quality media [6-7 CD's] (BTW, I've read on these forums that you can burn it on 1 CD + 1 DVD).

If the other ThinkPad has a CD recorder, you could probably swap the hard drive to burn the Recovery Disc set.

It seems as though you can use a network connection once you get into the R&R environment. I would boot into it and check to see if it gives you the option.

thank you for the posts!
i had an external enclosure and finally enclosed the desktop dvdrw so as to write the recovery cds.

Though i have another problem now...
It only prompted me to write ONLY 1 CD! The cd has inside an i386 as well as the r&r folder but is only ~150MB! I dont wont to risk it... so does anybody know why i was not prompted to put a dvd or cds?

You probably were trying to burn a Rescue Media CD (1 CD). This is different than burning the Recovery Disc set. AFAIK you can burn as many Rescue Media CD's as you like, however you can burn only one Recovery Disc set.

Note that the names above are what IBM used. Now that Lenovo has taken over, the naming may be slightly different. One other name that is used is Product Recovery CD's.

The old way was to go to: Start > All Programs > Access IBM > Create Recovery Discs.

The new way is to go to: Start > All Programs > ThinkVantage > Create Recovery Media, then click on radio button: "Create a set of Product Recovery discs now", and finally click on OK. You can also create the Rescue Media from this screen.

what happens after you burn 1 recovery cd set

#10 Post by redchair » Fri May 12, 2006 4:35 pm

I have not burned any recovery cd sets yet. What happens after you burn 1 recovery cd set, does the icon for "Create Recovery CDs" dissapear? The reason why I am asking is because I do not have the option to create recovery CDs, only the rescue media. (someone else is also having this problem).

Also, please see my posts in the above topic to see how some people may NOT have a recovery partition in the first place. (or search the urls below for "minint" or "preboot").

The icon does not "disappear". There really is no icon to begin with.

In the older version of Rescue and Recovery - V2, there is a program choice under Start > All Programs > Access IBM > Create Recovery Discs. This menu choice remains even after you burn the discs. But when you launch the program, you get a dialog box that the discs have already been made, and you are only allowed to make one set (paraphrasing here). There is another program under Start > All Programs > Access IBM > Create Rescue Media (1 CD). This program remains fully functional no matter how many times you use it.

IIRC, in the newer version of Rescue and Recovery - V3, there is a program choice under Start > All Programs > ThinkVantage > Create Recovery Media. This menu choice remains even after you burn the discs. But when you launch the program, you will see that the option to Create Product Recovery Discs has been greyed out. You can still Create Rescue Media (1 CD) from this screen.

I want to migrate a R&R partition from one hard drive to another on a T41. I figured I'd make a set of recovery CD's to do that. (I am not the original owner and I don't have recovery CD's). I did a factory restore from the R&R partition, but I do not see an option to make CD's. There is no program choice under Start > All Programs > Access IBM > Create Recovery Discs. In fact "Start > All Programs > Access IBM >" does not exist, What do I have to install to get this utility in a T41? I see an access IBM users guide here, but that's about it.

You probably need to contact IBM and get a set of recovery disk for your computer, at this point. They will allow you to reimage the hard disk and restore the service partition. It will erase your hard drive in the process.
