News on new Pentium M's and a question

#1 Post by AtmosMan » Tue Jul 06, 2004 4:27 pm

Here is an article about the new Pentium M processor coming out this fall:

http://theinquirer.net/?article=17053

It mentions something called Execute Disable technology. Does anyone know what this is?

Basically, NX uses processor hardware to discourage the kind of virus, worm, and Trojan Horse attacks seen in scourges such as Blaster, Sasser, and Code Red, which have cost companies billions of dollars in downtime and disinfectant chores. Working with memory protection technology built into Windows XP SP2, it toughens the distinction between program and data areas in system memory -- in other words, stops any attempt to insert and execute code from memory locations set aside for data.

I really wasn't expecting this  Nocona (Prescott Xeon) was the only Intel x86-32/64 processor to have announced support for XD.

It makes me wonder if there is anything else hiding in the Dothan core, and I do wish Intel would set a firm date for the 915M chipset launch date.
Homebuilt PC: AMD Athlon XP (Barton) @ 1.47 GHz; nForce2 Ultra; 1GB RAM; 80GB HDD @ 7200RPM; ATI Radeon 9600; Integrated everything else!

In someways I am still waiting for them to give more information before I buy a T42... I figure if I can still using my current system until I get more info either the T42 price will go down or I might hold out for the new chips..
