T43 Fan PULSING Problem

Hi,

Anyone know if there is a fix for the fan pulsing/acceleration problem (NOT the general fan noise problem)?

I have gotten around it by going from BIOS Mode-to-Smart Mode-to-Manual; it isn't much of a problem for me as I never seem to get it on levels 1 and 2. 3 and 4 are more noticable, but before the fan utility; I haven't heard them long enough to notice it. HTH

Where can you change those settings (mode-to....) Me in the bios all i can see in "thermal scheme" is balanced and maximum performance.

I have bios version 1.24 ?

I didn't do it in the BIOS; rather, I did that little toggle in Shimodax's Fan Control Utility. Whenever it occurs, I just either wait it out or do that and it seems to go away. Also, I think you can do the same thing by switching power schemes. Let us know how it works for you.

On my T40, the pulsing problem only seems to appear on the lowest fan settings. Thus, I use medium and fast fan settings (level 4 and 7) only

Edit - Sadly, the pulse still occurs even at level 7, though it is less noticeable than at lower levels.

I wanted to see if this "solution" to the pulsating fan really worked. In the Fan Controller I changed the update interval to 1 second, then repeatedly switched between "manual mode: 64" and "smart mode: 1" every second or so by clicking on the radio buttons. It did eliminate the pulsating, resulting in a nice constant hum from the fan. However, now my mouse makes an annoying clicking noise approximately every second

Is this controller really worth it... i mean, i don't want to fry my cpu !!!

is it worth it, you ask..?!

YES, it is worth the effort to quiet the noisy fan down a bit..

i am in the library now and before i told the fan control utility to take SMART control, the fan was running constantly and the GPU was at 46 C...

it is now 49 C. and the fan is still off..

IMO, if you are smart enough to use a thinkpad then you are smart enough to use this utility..

Agreed. You will fry nothing as long as you follow the instructions. I have had it running thus far and have had no problems except the, quite rare, case where it couldn't set the fan states; the few times that happened, I simply tried it again and it was fine. If you *really* want to be sure no harm is done, you can try the PC Doctor tool and check out everything before and after.
