Could someone tell me what this contraption is (just under the heading STORAGE). Seem to take ultrabay devices through this external contraption.

That is either an IBM Portable Drive Bay or an IBM Portable Drive Bay 2000. Portable Drive Bay has PCMCIA connectivity, PDB 2000 has both USB and PCMCIA connectivity.
