Warranty

#1 Post by GuitarBill » Sun Jan 08, 2006 7:13 pm

I just 'won' an auction for a T42p literally during the last minute. Up front the Seller stated (in LARGE RED LETTERS):

IBM Factory Sealed 3 Year Warranty! :D

I took this to mean the unit was 'brand new' and being supplied with a FACTORY IBM 3 year Warranty. This was because I won a similar auction 4 years ago for a T21 which came with the 3 year IBM warranty and the fact that I had to lean on that warranty 3 times in the 3 year period. Most importantly, the service as supplied by IBM was unbelievably Good!

After winning the auction, I decided to print out the entire presentation of the Seller.

On page 6 of 10 of my landscape printout, it was stated in small black print:

IBM Factory Sealed Product - 3 Year International Warranty. It further stated "These remanufactured products are sold by IBM with a L-Claim classification, which means that they are in brand new condition ." Further explanation of that followed in the Seller's presentation.

On page 7 of 10 the warranty is described as follows:

Total 42 Month Warranty. Six Months IBM Global Financing Warranty plus 3 Year Mack Computer International Extended Warranty. :) OR :( ???

Not knowing what this will or will not cover 8) , I am 'nervous' to say the least. Does anyone have experience having used this Warranty? Was this a BIG mistake? HELP!!!

It sounds like you got a certified used to me:

"These remanufactured products are sold by IBM with a L-Claim classification, which means that they are in brand new condition

The certified used comes in a box sealed from IBM, depending on what you paid it would not be a rip-off unless you were expecting a machine with no miles on it.

You might search here for "mack warranty." Here's one thread on the subject.

Warranty

First, thanks for your responses. The 'wear' factor doesn't bother me. I'm sure technology will proceed faster than the computer 'wear' factor. However, the expenses (shipping to NJ + $35 handling/return are 'acceptable' as long as it's not re-occuring - which wouldn't seem likely given the quality of the Thinkpad upfront. What is troublesome is the 3 month turn-around time mentioned.

The question is would you 'run with it' or try to duck this bullet per the somewhat 'skewed' representation by the seller???

If the price was right it will be worth it. I got a Certified Used T30 from IBM and it truly was hard to distinguish from new. If there are any issues with it hopefully they will manifest themselves early on so you don't have to use the MACK.

personally, i would not trust a MACK warranty..

especially if they have a "3 month" turnaround time..
THREE MONTHS..????
wait a minute..
sounds like a bad deal to me..
