T43 2669-44U - DID I GET A DEAL/BARGAIN OR NOT

#1 Post by shynepo3 » Wed Jan 18, 2006 1:07 am

Hello everyone....I recently purchased my first laptop, an IBM Thinkpad, T43, model #2669-44U. I got it through a friend, brand new, for $1200 Canadian dollars (that's with tax included already). I trusted my friend, and he assured me it was an amazing deal, and did no research whatsoever. Now that I have it, I am beginning to think I got ripped off....they don't seem to make this model anymore, since it's not on the Levono website for sale, and I went to bestbuy, and they had all these laptops, which seemed to come with more features for only slightly more, or even cheaper...here are the specs of my notebook:

Product: ThinkPad T43 2669-44U
Original description: P M 750(1.86GHz), 512MB RAM, 40GB 5400rpm HD, 14.1in 1024x768 LCD, 64MB ATI Radeon X300, CDRW/DVD, Intel 802.11bg wireless, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, Fingerprint reader, 6c Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro

Another question...are the USB ports 2.0? AND WOULD ANYBODY KNOW when this model came out/manufactured date? I can't find this info anywhere....

THANKS FOR YOUR COMMENTS AND ANSWERS. :? :?

That is an amazing price for a 14" T43, and while those machines at BestBuy have more features, they are mostly cheap consumer models where your T43 is a high-end business machine.

A Chevrolet usually has more gadgets and costs less than a BMW, but given the choice, I'll choose the BMW every single time.

Hello and Welcome to the Thinkpad Forums :)

Well, I did a search through tabook and came up with nothing in relation to that model number; see, ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pcinstitu ... tabook.pdf

The tabook.pdf link is also in the FAQ as well.

Does it have the same model number as your friend gave you on the bottom labels?

Thanks for the info guys....

It definitely says 2669-44U....it's weird it's not in that tabook.....I feel like calling the tech support # to find out what's going on....it definitely closely resembles the 2668-44U...in fact, I don't see a difference at all....so if it was a 44u, woul 1200 be worth it?

I have heard of such "TP's" in the past, but have never heard of them! EDIT: Seen them!!!!

Sometimes when you look at the options available on a ThinkPad, you think that you can get anything you want! Most of the time, it is not the case, you can get HD1 on the T43p BUT not in the T43..etc! ( This is from past "word of mouth" so I can't prove or disprove it...if anyone can shed some light!?).

What happens is a Corporation (they only want them configured by the specs that the IT department demands) puts in a request for a large lot of TP's or a "reseller" wants certain specs and would like to make a large purchase...a one of a kind ThinkPad that they only carry.....so IBM will create that ThinkPad for them and create a new "Model-Type" to fit that configuration....but will never put forward the resources needed to change every piece of literature that they have floating on the web.....so hence a "Limited Edition" is born... :D

Well, in the case of a large order from IT, wouldn't they just spec the order out via CTO?

Sounds like a very good price. Just under a year ago, the thought of a $1000 or less T43 wasn't even imaginable.

No. When you buy them by the hundreds or thousands at a time, you have a dedicated PC sales specialist who is at your beck and call and frequently onsite. They put together the build based on the requirements you give them and give you a quote. Then a part number is generated for that configuration, and that's what you order. You wouldn't be messing around with a web site and an anonymous person on a phone trying to put together a build.

I think you've gotten a very good deal. Other 2669 models in the tabook seem to be education models and come with 3 year onsite warranty.
The 266944U is probably exactly the same as the 266844U, except for the warranty. Onsite (2669) vs mail-in (2668).
Check your warranty here:

The consumer models at Best Buy usually come with only 1 year warranty, integrated graphics and Windows XP Home, not the dedicated graphics and Windows XP Pro that you have.
