T23 No Longer Charges Battery

#1 Post by morgie » Thu Feb 23, 2006 4:02 pm

I've seen 2 x T23's develop a fault where they stop charging the battery. Definitely not software related, or battery or power supply issues. From the research I have done it seems there's a motherboard fault that can develop, perhaps a dodgy capacitor? Can anyone shed anymore light on this? Thanks.

Thanks for the reply...

Yup, works fine over power. It will work from batteries that have been charged else where. It's just the fact that there is no wattage etc activity, e.g. no charging of the battery (this can best be seen through Battery Maximiser's "Battery Information").

this is gunna sound like a duh statement but that really does leave it to basically a short in the charging circut... something else you might try though is plug it in to power but leave it turned off and leave the battery in it for an hour or so an see if the battery gets warm... that would mean that atleast there was power getting to it, maybe only a tiny amount...

T23's i havent ever had to tear into the charging circutry on, ive got one personally and theres only about 3 other ones in use where i work, so i really dont get to work on them much. theres is one with another problem in my parts bin, if yur into board level repairs maybe we can compare some readings an figure out what for sure needs to be done, you got multi meter??

I can't get hold of a multi meter right now, but will let you know in the near future. Would be interesting to know exactly what has gone on the mainboard to cause this.

Ok cool. I don't have the machines with me at the moment, but will post back when I do (could be a matter of months). In the meantime if anyone has had this same fault, or knows of it....

Last night I had a new T30 battery in my T23 suddenly go bad, like ZERO. Tried a partially charged battery from a T20 and the T23 and charged that battery.

Split the T30 battery case and checked the batteries, they were fully charged. Theres a small PCB inside that has several chips that regulate the charging rate and store the battery history that had gone bad.

Wish I had saved one of the old batteries I threw out last summer, could have swapped the PCB from one of the old ones into the T30 battery case.

OK, odd huh. It's definitely not battery related in this case - tried different batts, the same batts in different machines etc. Done the same with power leads/adapters, hard drive builds etc. Definitely ruled everything down to the motherboard.

Not to sound like a dumb question, but have you checked the contact to make sure that one of the charging pins on the motherboard hasn't been bent or corroded?

I had a similar problem with a TP600E board, and found that one of the pins broke off in the battery, because the owner had forced it in/out.

I was really suprised that the systemboard even worked at this point.
