T30 CPU change

#1 Post by plattfuss » Thu Mar 09, 2006 5:33 am

my T30 (2366-63G) has a P4 m 1.6GHz. My friend has a dead R40 with good P4 m 2.0GHz in it.
Is it possible to swap CPUs in my T30 with it?

To the best of my recollection the answer is yes.

The R40 and T30, as well as the A31, all use the same Intel CPU.

I'm guessing that the CPU swap is not for the faint of heart, yes?

If you'd be comfortable doing this: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-43022 you'd be halfway to replacing a CPU in an A30/31.

mmm, that's nothing.

I guess the real problem is finding a P4-M that isn't amazingly expensive and then what to do about cooling.

The 2.6GHz is incredibly expensive, going for ~$350 and up on eBay.

(I was able to get one for my A31p awhile ago for $150, but that was a fluke!)

The 2.4GHz CPU is often seen for much less, usually ~$100 or even less.

Check your favorite price search engine for the Intel product number for the processor you're interested in. E.g., the 2.4GHz is: BXM80532GC2400D.

What model Thinkpad do you have?

T30 2GHz

I know upgrading the chip wouldn't really make a difference for day to day stuff but being able to load up one more VST or shave time off of PS plugins is relevant to my interests.

I read on the T30 "Information" page that it was availible up to 2.4GHz. Did they change the heatsink or any of the piping?

The fan and heatsink (Fan 2, 46P3132) are the same in all 2GHz and up T30s.

Ah! That is very interesting! I put in a 2.6 GHz SL6WZ that gets very hot: Up to 85°C. It used to have a 1.8 GHz processor. Do you know whether the 46P3132 is better as far as heat transportation goes?

Yes, slightly larger fan and heatsink.
