another 'I got my T60' thread,some thoughts, config. 200755U

#1 Post by kaotic504 » Tue Mar 14, 2006 9:25 pm

ok, i got my T60 200755U (1.86 Core Duo, 15" FlexView 1400x1050, 60gb, 512mb, A/B/G, CD/DVD, ATI x1300). here are my thoughts on it. The laptop is quiet. And my lap does not heatup after using it for an hour. but i've done nothing but install Office, FireFox, and a few other small apps and surf the web. I returned my Z60t to get this and i notice that they have changed the fingerpoint reader software. i don't recall having to select a box above the finger and the swipe to get the fingerprint registered. but that's just my thought. The FlexView is good. it's nice and BRIGHT when plugged in, when not plugged in however, the maximum brightness is a bit disappointing. It is better than the standard screen i had on my Z60t though. the plastic surrounding the PCMCIA and Express card slot is thin. actually, i think the whole keyboard area plastic is a bit thinner than i'm used to on my T22. You can grab the plastic right where the card slots are and easily flex it, not exactly what i was expecting. The fingerpoint reader reads my index finger a lot better than the Z60t did, but it doesn't read my middle finger as well as my Z60t does. i don't know if is the difference in position or what, but i guess that doesn't matter. i have to admit that PowerPoint and Access loads a lot quicker than on my other laptops but those laptops aren't nearly as powerful. i am EXTREMELY disappointed that Lenovo went ahead and installed Google Desktop on my computer along w/ the Picasa software. i had no desier to have that on my computer. i think i manage my files well enough. They're probably like Dell and getting paid $1 billion to put it on our desktops. One more thing, did anyone get a call from a Lenovo rep asking/soliciting you to buy the eTrust antivirus software? they told me it was $69.99 w/ $70 in rebates (1x$40, 1x$30). i told them i wasn't interested but they were VERY persistent to say the least and i finally gave in b/c he gave me a discount on that and so i MAY make money back. anyway, just some thoughts if you have any questions, i'd be glad to answer.

Looking forward to it!

This might be of interest to you, so you can run your laptop in its high-res glory. You know, without the eye-strain.

kaotic - have you ever tried a T43? if so, did you use it in a quiet environment?

I switched from a T42 to a T43 and the fan is EXTREMELY LOUD on this thing.

I've heard mixed reports about the fans on the T60, though I've only read reports from users with 15" machines so that might have no bearing on my machine (a 14" SXGA+).

I'm a big fan of Liquid View for boosting the size of on-screen fonts:

Yes. I really noticed this today too when I switched over to battery power.

Actually, this brightness issue is a real concern.

On AC power the screen is just right. Anyone know of a way to jack the brightness back up on battery power?

The Power Manager is no help here.

you probably have to go into the BIOS and change the setting there. you'll have to set it at High rather than Normal.

thanks for the link to the software. but as for using a T43, no i haven't. Some students in the Business School when i was in college had T43's and i didn't notice that they were loud. i'm the kind of guy that really likes quiet computers though (i have 2 liquid cooled desktops rigged for silence and a modified Shuttle) and this does not bother me at all. my Shuttle PC iand my 2 liquid cooled computers are louder than my laptop but then again the 2 liquid cooled computers are running 120mm fans. my T60 is still quieter than my Shuttle w/ 2 80mm Panaflo fans. oddly enough, the fan does run often on my laptop. but in my house w/ the TV and everything off, it's pretty quiet, i'm sure any office building noise would drown out the sound from the fan running on the laptop.

To some extent; all Thinkpads since the 600 Series have had variations when it comes to the fan noise. I don't know quite how to explain it other than the fact that IBM must have been playing around with different control algorithms and ECs. Different models seem to have had different EC control software on them, but I am not completely sure. I do know, however, that certain ECs have their little quirks and the ambient temperature plays a big role in it.

I can't wait to get my hands on a T60 to try it out; I should probably just head on over to the Office Depot one block away. :)

I have not done any research on this so I'll just ask, if you buy one from office depot do you get the year warranty from ib__ opps! (hard to break old habits) I mean Lenovo? And does office depot have a 90 day store return like their other hardware. :?:

Well; I think that depends on what model you get.

I have a brochure from the local Office Depot on all the Thinkpads they have, except for the T60 and the X60 as I got the brochure before they shipped to the Office Depot store.

All I see in this brochure states that the systems come with a 1-yr limited warranty for both the system and battery except for the tablet which comes with a 3-year system/1-year battery warranty.

This might vary from store to store since the warranty is dependent on the model number, I think.

:)

You should be able to change the LCD brightness to high in the Thinkpad Configuration Utility in your Control Panel.
