Installed 39T0026 in IBM T42 2378REU but it's not showing up

#1 Post by doppler » Sun Mar 19, 2006 8:52 am

I've read through this forum for quite a while, and it's what helped me decide to buy my IBM T42 2738REU back in June last year, because although I couldn't get bluetooth built it, I could order the FRU component and plug it in, as the antenna is there. Great. So, I procrastinate for months before placing my order with IBM. I don't remember the FRU I originally ordered, but it's well documented on this site. IBM then informs me, a few weeks later that the part is backordered and has been superceeded by another part. The FRU is 39T0026. I ask if this is comptible with the part I wanted they said yes, I checked their return policy if this unknown to me part didn't work, they said you open the box, it's yours. Oh well, it should work right?

Well, 3 months later, the part finally shows up;

I remove my original 56k modem, and place the new part in, and reassemble the machine.

I turn it on and am greeted with the message:

"ERROR 1803: Unauthorized daughter card is plugged in - Power off and remove the daughter card."

Well, you can imagine my disappointment. Well I wasn't giving up. I researched this, closest I could get was the 1802 error related to the wifi mini-pci card. I removed the modem, didn't reassemble, downloaded no-1802 and ran it. Popped the modem back in. No more 1803 error. Ok this is good.

So now I boot into windows XP. So far so good. Use the FN-f5 to turn on the modem. It's not listed. Download a variety of drivers from IBM;

bthwxp1o.exe
1umb040ww.exe
1ybm02ww.exe
77ba10ww.exe

The 77ba10ww.exe got me the furthest, but has installed the following drivers... (get this...)

"Dell Bluetooth USB adapter"
"Dell Elwood Bluetooth Module Firmware Upgrade"

Dell? IBM driver, IBM part, IBM notebook, where did Dell come from?

Oh, and each of those devices throw back error code "10, cannot start".

Booted into knoppix 4.0.2. /proc/acpi/ibm/bluetooth says not installed.

My BIOS is the latest (3.19 1RETDNWW)

My USB VID is 413, PID is 8501 rev 9999 (as reported by the "Dell" Devices"

I'm not even sure if this is the BT II, III, or IV.

Any help, or pointers would be wildly appreciated.

Andrew

Hmm.. This is an interesting thread (I too am an owner of a 2378REU - so cheers!).

But from your description there, it sounds to me that the part isn't the right one for the machine. It's easy to get confused nowadays especially with all the part number changes from IBM to lenovo ... According to system service parts listing the modem with bluetooth daugher card is part# 91P7319 ...

On the other hand, if you've installed it, there ought to be a way to check the status of the hardware. In knoppix, for instance, running " # lspci " as root should print out a result of hardware on your machine, if it's not listed it could mean that the daughter card isn't seated properly (looking into the proc directory won't really be of much help unless you install the module or recompile ibm_acpi - unless, of course if you have cold/hotplug compiled into your kernel to begin with)... Just mentioning that because I recently replaced my intel2200BG wifi card with the atheros based IBM a/b/g MkI and was getting all sorts of problems, only to realize that it wasn't seated snugly in the slot.

A few more points to ponder - did you remove the battery during the installation? is the card properly secured? are the bluetooth antenna cables properly attached (snug)? did you reset the bios (sometimes that helps)?

Sorry that I couldn't be of more help, but hope this sheds some light on your problem..

FRU 91P7319 is Bluetooth III with 56K Modem (BMDC-2). This is what I have on a T42.

FRU 39T0022 and 39T0024 are Bluetooth IV with 56K Modem (BMDC-3). This is what T43 uses.

This IBM page says 39T0026 is Bluetooth IV for X41. Why it says 39T0026 replaces 91P7319 is beyond me.

I have read that people were unsuccessful on using Bluetooth IV (bluetooth v1.2) on a T42. I really hope that this new FRU 39T0026 will be a different story.

I would suggest you call IBM on the issue, since they said it will work.

39T0026 is also is a replacement for 39T0022 and 39T0024, so it is Bluetooth IV with 56K Modem (BMDC-3) and I am using it on my T43. But I don't know if this replacement will be suitable for T42, it looks like it doesn't.

Also even if you can find workarounds, IBM won't tell you about it. My T43 had the BT antenna installed in it, and had the BT LED beside the wireless LED. When I asked them that I want to upgrade to a bluetooth, they told me that it wasn't possible because their list didn't show my model as BT upgradeable (it's a T43 2686NAU). I told them that I opened it and I saw the antenna connector, clearly labeled as Bluetooth Antenna. That didn't convinced them, and they sold the part to me as nonrefundable. It's working just fine...

Thanks for the suggestions, lets start with the lspci output (I also did lsusb thinking as other people have said it's a USB device, it doesn't appear to be).

Old modem

0000:00:1f.6 Modem: Intel Corp. 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Modem Controller (rev 01) (prog-if 00 [Generic])

Status: D0 PME-Enable- DSel=0 DScale=0 PME-

New Modem

0000:00:1f.6 Modem: Intel Corp. 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Modem Controller (rev 01) (prog-if 00 [Generic])

Status: D0 PME-Enable- DSel=0 DScale=0 PME-

Oddly, both are identical. I see no additional devices in the lspci when the new modem is installed vs the old modem. The device listed does go away when either card is not installed.

I'm thinking my biggest problem here is my fn-f5 doesn't start the card... i've heard it's basically off otherwise?

Can anyone with this card and knoppix/linux access check their lspci and lsusb to see if it shows up there and show us the info?

Thanks
Andrew

Why did you switch from the Intel to the Atheros?

I'm looking for a BT/modem card for my X31 and my T41.
The X31 manual lists 91P7315.
The manual lists 39T0022 (BTIV/56K) for the X32.

The T41 manual lists 91P7315 (BT/56K), 91P7319 (BTIII/56K)

I've found a 39T0026 for sale. Can I use this without any error codes?

Are there later made cards or replacement cards I should be looking for that are better/

Thanks

That card (39T0026) will give you an "1803 error" in both T41 and X31.

Try not to bump 5-year old threads, BTW...start your own... :)
