My X60s, ultrabase review(slowly growing)...

#1 Post by aceo07 » Fri Apr 07, 2006 12:45 pm

So I got my X60s today. I'm in the process of setting it up. I will add more comments, observations and questions throughout the next couple of days.

The ultrabase works now. It just needed an EXTRA firm push on the top left corner to get a final click. It takes a good deal of pressure since I couldn't do it while the screen was up. I had to close the screen and very firmly push down on the screen.

Observation 1. The ultrabase doesn't seem that great. It's light, but the construction could be have better. There is only 1 hook to hold the laptop in place. I believe the X2 ultrabase had 2 hooks. I think the release and power buttons should have more of a response when it's pressed. Most of the time I can't tell.

Observation 2. Surprised to find that they loaded Google Desktop and Google Toolbar (for IE) for me. I uninstalled both.

Observation 3. The 8 cell battery is heavy. :) It makes the back of the laptop heavy. Something to get used to after using the X22 with a front battery.

Observation 4. Symantec Client Security = Symantec firewall + Antivirus client. Trial versions for a couple of months.

Observation 5. The trackpoint buttons are as bad as I thought. I liked the version on the X22 better. It looked better and the colors were nicer. I don't like out I can see some of the PCB underneath.

Observation 6. Using the ultrabase, the ethernet connection is transfered to the ultrabase. I had to disconnect the ethernet cable from the laptop and plug it into the ultrabase. It does NOT give you 2 ethernet connections, even though both ports are accessible.

Observation 7. Doing 2 instances of Folding@Home on each core 100%, the cpu went up to 67f.

Observation 8. Virtualization is fast! Used Parallels VM software to run Linux Live CD.

Observation 9. The tilt of the keyboard caused by the slimmer front and the back battery is certainly nice.

Observation 10. There's a small rectangle area on the top left corner of the lcd screen that seem to be plastic. I don't know what it's covering, but it's not solid underneath.

Observation 11. They angled the LED so that the light is centered on the keyboard. The X22 LED is mostly focused on the left side of the keyboard.

Comment 1. Wish most of the connections were on the back. I understand that based on design, it's not possible. Or move the power connector to the same side as the vga and ethernet. If I didn't have the ultrabase, I'd have 3 cables on the left side and 1 on the right. Not a pretty sight.

Thanks to all who had comments or answered my questions. :)

In the power manager there is a check box for been when power state changes. Uncheck it and won't beep anymore.

As far as the Ultrabase, make sure you are sliding the fron into the clips before you press it down into the base. You want to kind of put it in on an angle fron first and than press down the back. Mine hooks in solid.

Yup, I'm sliding it in that way. However, it doesn't detect any change and doesn't get power or usb or video connections.

When I place it on the ultrabase, the right side with the hook is secure, but the left side can be pulled out slightly.

I don't have this problem. The X60 firmly snapped into the base. I guess your problem occurs when it's not fully snapped so that the power couldn't get through the unit.

I have the problem that the on/off switch in front of the ultrabase doesn´t work. Did I overlook something?

This X60s is begining to grow on me. Some observations:
- initially, I didn't like the bland colorless trackpoint buttons but I'm now I'm used to it; the buttons feel fine;
- the laptop feels sturdier than our old X40 and X32;
- the thinkpad light is more focused and seems wider;
- the toshiba 100 GB hard drive is surprisingly quiet - I can barely hear it and feel it;
- keyboard feels as nice as older thinkpads;
- LCD seems brighter than our X40 and X32;
- the LCD lid feels very sturdy with no creaks; actually this laptop doesn't creak anywhere!
- love the extra USB port! (there's three);
- the laptop is a little heavier than I expected; it feels heavier than the X40 (prob. b/c it IS heavier...)

All in all, this is one quality notebook; Lenovo did a nice job.

:lol: :lol:

I think the locking tab to the right of it prevents you from accidently turning it off. (I haven't tried.) If it in an unlocked position?

Yes, this was the solution! Thank you, I thought the little slider was part of the mechanism to keep the laptop on the ultrabase.

It looks like the Ultrabase problem is a rather common one.
I have got two X60s's shipped to me in error (model 1704-4JU), and *both* of them did not charge from the Ultrabase or see the CDRW. I have tried applying pressure, latching and unlatching with no success.
In one of the laptop-ultrabase combinations I had sound through Ultrabase, the other combination has been mute.
I have returned both machines and waiting for a replacement now... :roll:
