Ultrabay slim into ultrabay2000 ?

#1 Post by thibouille27 » Wed May 31, 2006 7:05 am

Is there any adapter for this?
I'd like to upgrade my slow superslim uj-822s but reusing it on my X23 would be really cool ;)

I believe Edward Mendelson had some information on this in the following thread.

I hate to rain on the parade, but it looks like the Ultrabay 2000 to Ultrabay Slim converter has been discontinued. From the document here, "Effective withdrawal date: 28 Apr 2006".

IBM Parts lookup doesn't show Part Number 62P4557 available any longer. A Pricegrabber search says a few merchants have it, to the tune of around $50 USD.

Hope this helps.

P.S.: Does anybody remember the part number for the blank drive insert for the Ultrabay Slim?

Amazing ... I can't go to IBM, erm, Lenovo and see my past orders. They're the only online vendor in years that I can't.

Anyway ... checked my boxes. My UltraBay Slim HDD adapter is 62P4554 and my Thinkpad Slim Drive adapter for Ultrabay 2000 is 62P4557. I find it unconscionable if Lenovo discontinues 62P4557 ... they're still selling the Dock II, right? Well, that's how you put your UltraBay Slim optical drive in the Dock. Duh. (Or ... how does one say "duh!" in Chinese?)

I don't know what's going on with IBM Retail Parts. Almost every part I've searched for by FRU number for my T42 shows not available. Mostly, only accessories seem to be available. IBM/Lenovo keeps changing part numbers and has no cross reference. Totally ridiculous in my opinion. The only way I can find parts for my T42 is with Google. There are numerous sources for IBM parts from online retailers.

What I mean to say is that if the part is out-of-stock, I can understand that. But for replacement parts to be totally unavailable when they still sell that model? What gives? :?

Wait ... is that what I think it is? A blank plastic insert or something for the Ultrabay Slim? Like the Apple G3 Powerbook DVD bay "blank?" I thought they didn't make anything like that, and I'd have to use my 2nd HDD Adapter without a drive in it. (goes off searching for one)

[edit] IBM/Lenovo refers to it as an "Ultrabay Slim travel cover," sounds like a nylon case to me. Someone give me a clue?

Clue Dave. I'm looking at three of them still in their boxes.

To JHEM: Thanks! Now I need to order one (and of course, IBM Parts lookup says it's not available online).

To davidspalding: This is what I understand 13N5108 to be:

Has anybody called IBM parts about 62P4557 or 13N5108? I just got my Dock II and wanted to stick a UltraBay Slim Hard Disk adapter in there and stick the blank in my T43. Anybody got one to sell  ?

I assume you are directing this at my earlier comment.

I am not trying to say that. But IMO IBM/Lenovo is controlling the parts availability to an excessive degree. Most likely, if I enter the FRU part number in the Wholesale Store web page, the part would show up. I cannot find out for sure because I do not have Customer number and a Location ID. But enter the service part FRU number in the Retail Store, and you are likely to come up dry unless it is considered an accessory. Maybe some service parts (such as a keyboard) would show up if you had the current part number. The part number that shows up in Warranty and Parts information on my year and a half old T42 will be listed as unavailable. Even if I use the service parts list web page, the part number will show up as unavailable. For example, go Lenovo's Keyboard service parts - ThinkPad T40/p, T41/p, T42/p web page for the T42. Enter either English, U.S. Keyboard FRU number 08K5044 or 13N9831 for the 14.1" model, in the search box, in the Retail Parts Store, and you will come up dry. I know that keyboards are still being made for the 14.1" T42, so either the two numbers above are obsolete, or Lenovo is not selling these keyboards from the Retail Parts Store web page.

I like to look things up on the web to determine if I want to make a purchase. This is almost impossible (except for accessories) on Lenovo's site. If a FRU number has been superceded, it needs to be reflected on the Service Parts web page. Or at least a search on Lenovo's site using a former FRU part number should bring up the current FRU number for any item.

To me, this just means that Lenovo either: (1) is putting up barriers for end users to service their own ThinkPads, or (2) they don't want the prices of replacement parts to be easily found. It appears the only way for end users to order many service part FRU's is to call IBM parts help at 1-800-765-5944 (for US customers). A pain in the [censored] if you ask me.

Interesting. Type it in the US site as I mentioned above, and you come up empty. :(

I was not trying to say that 08K5044 is definitely unavailable from Lenovo. Just that it is unavailable from Lenovo's Retail Parts Store web page. What good is a Retail Parts Store web page that has only a few parts? :?

The current Lenovo nomenclature for this part is "optional travel bezel"

I just recieved mine and that is what it says in the documentation.

I was joking, Gom. But I'm also less jovially bothered that a site that was notoriously thorough for finding spare parts is now more than problematic.

That part # came up in the IPB (mil-speak: Illustrated Parts Breakdown) diagram as "Ultrabay Travel Cover." As if it's a "bag," which some of the optical drives come with.

The plastic bezel looks like it's for the T60/Z60 (square bezel versus curved bezel), and one of hte pages specified. Makes sense, I've never heard of a plastic Ultrabay Slim insert for the T4x line.

I'm half-joking, I don't *need* a plastic insert as much as the G3 "Wall Street" Powerbook did. It saved several ounces pulling the DVD-R out.

The part number I posted (13N5108) was specifically for the T4X series travel bezel with a beveled front.

Color me confused. The pics that I find clearly illustrate a square-bezel. But this page calls it a "travel cover." You guys sure it isn't an automated Ultrabay cup holder?

The portion facing you is the FRONT and it's clearly beveled! The flat portion to the left of the image is the left-side rail.

Sorry, my box of Crayolas has become so PC that they have removed "confused" along with "flesh".
