What is the metal plate that comes with the Intel Pro Wireless 2100
for?
And where does it go and is it needed?

Spacer/Heat Shield.

Snaps over the card once the card is installed.

Needed? I don't know, but I have quite a collection of them already that I haven't bothered to install and none of the installation movies show one being installed.

I also love the fact that the movies, almost universally, show the installer struggling to attach the antenna leads AFTER he's installed the card.

Do yourself a favor, first install the antenna leads THEN install the card.

James

Thanks
Tell me about the wires...
Tried putting the card in 1st started to connect the Aux. wire and thought this would go much better if i had put the wires on 1st
so I did. LOL
Thanks on the heatspreader thing I can't for the life of me figure out how it goes on there so I think I will skip it.
The previous card didn't have one.

I think that you put it on the card first, then snap the card in place.

But, as I said, I've never bothered with one and have never had any problems with heat from the card. I'm on WiFi almost constantly with one or another of my home WAPs with my IBM 802.11a/b/g card.

James

I have never been able to get the metal plate back on when playing with the mini-PCI card.

I didn't bother with the metal plate. I couldn't find a way to make it fit, and the T40 mPCI install video I watched on IBM's site didn't show it at all.

It's also a few grams less weight I have to worry about :) Haven't had any problems at all either.

I talked to some support guys and the shield is there to hold the card in place by pressing the clips firmly onto the card. The T40 doesn't use it, but because the cards are used in other systems that do, it always included. Oh, said that the systems where the card is accessed by a little door on the bottom are the system usually that need it.
