Power supply unit (PSU) upgrade?

#1 Post by dclee012 » Fri Jun 16, 2006 2:30 am

Hi,

I need to upgrade a power supply in a ThinkCentre computer. Are there any compatibility issues I need to be aware of with non-IBM power supplies?

Specifically I need a 500+watt PSU. Any recommendations? Advice? Thanks,

Just some random thoughts... determine whether the main power connector on your motherboard has 20 or 24 pins. Then make sure the power supply has the same number. Some of the newer power supplies support both 20 and 24 via a "double plug" that gangs the 4 pins with the other 20.

I'd physically measure the power supply dimensions, then compare to a "standard" since such as ATX. If they are the same size, you are likely to be OK with another ATX supply. If your power supply is a different size, or it's an mATX, then you might have to hunt for something that fits. Make sure the air intake and outlet are in the right spots to match your case.

If you can determine the voltage at each pin of the main connector on a new power supply you're considering, as well as on your existing power supply--and they are the same-- then you will be OK for sure. If they are different, then the new supply will NOT work.

Try these guys for some info: http://www.pcpowercooling.com/home/ If you give them the exact model of your ThinkCentre, maybe they can recommend a specific power supply replacement.
