Installed SP2...

#1 Post by Nabeel » Sun Aug 08, 2004 12:51 pm

Seems to be working great...except...
I'm trying to figure out where 5gb went.
Is there a way to see what folders were added and how much space they take up, like a program that does it or something?

Don't know except that SP2 does not consume 5Gb (at least the latest Release Candidate did not). ... JDHurst

check your folder -> c:\windows\$ntservicepackuninstall$

consumes roughly 300 Mb depending on your OS system.

Are you sure it's not the hidden IBM partition - it's about that size. SP2 can be anything from 80 to 250 Mb depending on the state of your system before the updates - 5Gb seems a little excessive...

How does it interact with Access Connections? I'm sure the new firewall and wireless manager would conflict with the IBM software. I'm also wondering if I should uninstall the IBM Bluetooth software.

It detected the Access Connections and didn't interfere with it. There's a option for allowing 3rd party software to control it.

It's not the hidden partition, I wiped that. I guess I did have 15gb before I installed it..I recovered about two. I download more than I delete...woops.

So far it's working great, no problems at all. Explorer did crash twice, not sure why, but it started right back up (not blue screen, just says explorer.exe has performed a illegal operation), it was when I was browsing a directory of icons and I changed the viewing mode...but it did that for some odd reason, not sure why. Didn't do it every time tho, just twice out of like 15/20 times, but it's not doing it anymore.

I shut off the built in firewall, but it's nice, it alerts you when programs try to access the internet it alerts you, but I've shut the firewall off which probably isn't wise. Oh well.

Did you need to select that option?

i installed it today too.. works pretty nice except the part that monitors your antivirus software doesn't work with norton antivirus. symantec says they are releasing a fix aug. 10th and to check back on their site. other than that looks nice.

btw.. i had the MS wireless zero config service disabled before SP2 and after SP2 it is stil disabled and the new XP wireless wizard says it is turned off and that im using 3rd party software to configure my wireless networks.. thumbs up to microsoft for not changing those settings.

Nope, it was automatically setup.

For Norton, I just selected the option to let me control it, and that took care of that. I turned the firewall on just to try it out, not that bad.

According to

http://www.de.tomshardware.com/news/200 ... 91506.html

IBM does not recomend the installation of SP2! (Sorry the article is in german).

automated translation follows:

IBM warns of Windows XP service luggage 2

Big Blue sends at present in-house reports away, which warn employees before the Download and the installation of the generally sehnlichst expected Windows XP service luggage 2.

Although the safety update is urgently needed and many PC users from it will profit, so the enterprise, nevertheless substantial problems are to be expected due to the FR 2: It is already well-known that different programs of third offerers (like evenly IBM) do not function with the service luggage.

IBM wants to therefore offer an improved version of the FR to 2; the development of the Upgrades to the Upgrade at present still persists.

ibm warning is BS.

not the warning per sei, but the way people are interpreting it.

IBM has a lot of in house applications that SP2 can possibly break, until they understand how SP2 will interplay w/ everything any employee who installs it is possibly going to screwing themself. It has nothing to do with the fact that SP2 might suck or be the best thing since sliced bread.

Home users could possibly be affected by the same thing, but in general the pros for home users far outweigh the possible cons

Easy install

#13 Post by roybishop » Mon Aug 09, 2004 11:34 pm

I got SP2 from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en
(about 270MB) and it installed on my T42 in about 25 minutes with no problems.

This is the original IBM install with all their "extras". Looks good so far. The IBM Updater works. I notice one difference. I'm still using he "IBM Access Connections" program to manage the wireless. Before XP2, the XP Wireless Network Connection Status icon would let me click "View Wireless Connections" and show me all nearby nets. Now it says "Windows cannot configure this wireless connection" and tells me if I've enabled another program to configure it, to use that program. That may be a good thing. There appeared to be a lot of interactions before based on the numbers of conflicting items about how to configure in the IBM and MS support databases.

It seems to work well. I've had one minor problem with the task hanging when I tried to reset my AutoComplete entries under IE/Tools/Internet Options/Content/....

The default on Outlook Express now is not to download pictures imbedded in email until you click a bar at the top of the text. That's fine but I wish it would remember that you've clicked it when you go back a re-read that email instead of having to click it again.

I installed SP2 and have a question for anyone else. Did anyone else's computer stop showing the Professional logo on the Windows loading screen (with the progress bar on the bottom). As soon as I get into Windows, everything still says it, but not loading.

So weird.

SP2 replaced gv3.sys with intelppm.sys. It seems I should reinstall gv3.sys?

SP2 comes with most (all?) of the system DLL's recompiled with a new compiler; it doesn't add 300 MB of new stuff but mostly replaces existing files.

Got a question, did you have to reinstall any of your drivers when applying SP2 or does SP2 leave them alone?

<----- snip snip snip --->
This is what MS website says:
"DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE COMPUTER: A smaller, more appropriate download will be available soon on Windows Update. To receive this download, turn on the Automatic Updates feature in Windows XP to receive an optimized download of SP2. Please visit Protect Your PC for more information on receiving Windows XP SP2"

I only have my trusty T40p - so my question is:
Can I or can I not install from this link?

Thank you!
Thank you,

Of course you can, it is just that you use up their precious bandwidth
This version is actually far better than the update windows one since you can save it on a cd and save yourself downloading it all over again in case of a windows reinstall.

Yeah, did the SP2 update last night on my Desktop and Notebook and it didn't mess with the drivers except the files that are used by the drivers and supplied by Microsoft have been updated to the latest versions. The only thing is that on my desktop machine, it is keep popping up the AutoDialer when there is a connection on the NIC. I don't think the Security Center can be disabled unless you do a regedit or something.

I've disabled it. In the Control Panel, goto administrative tasks, open services, find Security Center, right click->properties, press stop then select disabled.

That's weird, mine hasn't done that.
Try reinstalling SP2

As for the restore point, you can delete the folder in c:\windows\system32 I think, unhide hidden folders, and its NTUNINSTALL, something like that. I have system restore and index service completely disabled, I find them to be a waste of space and resources...esp Indexing.

They're only saying 'not for individual' because it has all of the files. The one through Windows Update will only download the files you need.

Yep, that service controled the whole interface. Thanks for the tip. I wanted the sp2 updates, but i hated the interface for the layman to manage them. It helps on boot time too.
