M51 only restarts

#1 Post by SgtZeke » Wed Jul 12, 2006 3:34 pm

I have an M51 model 8113 that will not shut off. It instantly restarts after it shuts down. I have checked all the obivious power settings and Googled this to death with no success. Has anyone had this issue before?

Two possibilities I can think of:
1. Deep in the BIOS, check that you don't have Wake on Modem Ring enabled. I had the restart problem when I put a modem in my NetVista A30.
2. Motherboard (hardware) problem. I have a friend with the restart problem and it certainly looks like hardware problem at this point.

M51 restarting

You were right about it being a hardware problem. A coworker found the source shortly after I posted last night. User has a Black Box serial switch and one of the devices on it is an older Palm V serial. It was causing the feedback and restart. As soon as you switched to another device or blank spot on the box everything was normal. I looked this up and found there is known issues with older Palm's with serial connections. They have a db9 adaptor which is supposed to correct the problem. Had I not seen it I would have not believied it.
