Which laptop should I buy???

#1 Post by rrm » Wed Sep 06, 2006 3:43 pm

Greetings...

I have finally collected enough capital to buy a laptop and I have been looking at the Thinkpad T series for a long time.

I have look at the T42 (http://www5.pc.ibm.com/dk/products.nsf/ ... enDocument), and found it interesting, but I have also looked at their T60 laptop (http://www5.pc.ibm.com/dk/products.nsf/ ... enDocument) .

I have the following demand to a laptop and about 1000-2000$ to buy for:
- Robust (e.g. do not break when moving it around)
- Low weight (<= about 2 kg)
- Long battery time
- TrackPoint (I do not like touchpad)

I want to use the laptop to programming task, Internet surfing but not to games.

Finally, is it worth buying a laptop that can handle Windows Vista, when it is shipped?? (As far as I can see the chosen T42 do not fulfil the minimum requirement of Vista, especially the graphic card is not sufficient to handle Vista)

The T60 is about 2 years newer than the T42 and if prices are similar I would recommend the T60. Better (dual core) processors, newer technology RAM and faster SATA hard disks are among the reasons.

If the T60 comes with the Radeon X1300 (or better) it would be able to render Vista's Aero Glass interface. The T42 might struggle to run Windows Vista in basic interface.

Microsoft has had a history of publishing very optimistic system requirements (WinXP supposedly needed only 64MB to run but acceptable performance is usually only seen with 512MB of RAM or more), so I would take 'Windows Vista Capable' certification right now with a grain of salt.

if you have enough cash a T60 is the only thinkpad to get..
no question about it if Vista is the OS you will want to run on it..

wait a month or two to see what is coming in a T60 refresh and either pick up a newer T60 model or a current T60 model at a clearance sale price..

Try searching the forum for "T60" and "review". Several members have posted their own reviews, as well as links to reviews in magazines.

Go for the T60 and you will not be disapointed. I have had every T model since they were introduced years ago, and I find the T60 by far the nicest of the lot. Latest technology, fine build quality and designed to last.
