Firefly/Serenity

Anyone here watch the tv series Firefly and/or the movie sequel Serenity? My friend told me it's the "best" tv series ever, and the movie is even better...

Personally, I don't think it's worth wasting around 18 hours of my life...it does *seems* interesting, but somewhat bizarre.

Any thoughts?

It is pretty good for the most part, although this thing about the "two groups" probably means that your "friend" (yeah, got it

) might want a little help. They have those anonymous groups for it if you would like help with that; look at it this way, at least it is...no, no, it is pretty much as bad an addiction as you think it is.

Then again, this is coming from somebody that knows Klingon so....yeah.

It's very good. I couldn't watch it when FOX initially showed. Out of order and with a schedule that roamed as much as tbook's location used to, I might add. That could have been the problem.

Then someone loaned me his DVDs. I was hooked. The only thing "wrong" with it is that there aren't enough episodes.

i actually had the displeasure of attending a firefly fanclub meeting or something like that. a friend of a friend runs the thing off the internet, and i couldnt turn down the chance to party and mingle with girls.

naturally, there were 3 girls there and well, yea...they were "special."

the show reminds me of the other run of the mill shows viewable on sci-fi. ("IMO" for anyone who thinks anything to the contrary).

Sorry, I should have been clearer. I meant Star Trek in general (minus Voyager). I cant say for sure wheter TNG or TOS was better, because they both have their own positives and negatives. You've at least gotta admit that Kirk was a thousand times better than Picard. I mean, he got in bed with the hot chick more often than James Bond.

It was interesting, but nothing new really. It certaily doesn't stand up to the two best TV SciFi series of all time, Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits.

If you want to watch breakthrough TV SciFi, then you need to dedicate more than a few hours in order to assimilate:

1) Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

2) Red Dwarf.

Oh yes indeed James; Twilight Zone, the Outer Limits, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Red Dwarf are some of my all time SciFi favorites. FarScape can be included as well.

I was never able to give the series the time it deserved to learn to appreciate it and missed too many episodes to stay interested.

I'll have to borrow the DVDs from my BIL and spend a weekend viewing them.

While its not a series (its a movie), Forbidden Planet tops my list.

Another very cool movie is Fantastic Planet.

AFA Star Trek goes; its a toss up for me. The original Star Trek is always a favorite - it's where I cut my teeth. TNG is better in many respects, but I never did like #1. IIRC, I did like all the Enterprise characters in the original ST. My favorite ST and TNG characters are Kirk, Spock, Picard, and Data (not necessarily in that order). I was disappointed that Lieutenant Yar's character was short lived. My favorite recurring character was Q. John de Lancie did a fantastic job with that character.

I don't subscribe to cable TV, so I guess that's why I have never heard of Firefly.

Great and all....but you do know the problem with that, right?

I would want an avatar with that!

And one would either wind up with an animated gif of all the characters on Red Dwarf (composed by moi) and much grief...or an avatar having to do with *smeg*ma, which would go with an equal amount of grief.

Besides, the Four Feathers are a great avatar anyway and anything more than that, or a Bird Wearing a Crown, would open up Pandora's Box just like (

<---BANANA) might.

FWIW, i tried firefly..
the first episode..
caroline made me shut it off..
i sneaked serenity in the other night and she watched it through to the end..

i prefer picard et al.,
Q and worf..
great characters..

serenity..?
uhmm, no further comment..

EDIT: well, after some further thought, i DID enjoy serenity, even though the red head made rude comments from time to time..
scifi is NOT her favorite..

Firefly and Serenity are brilliant.

I can see that if you haven't watched Firefly then Serenity won't seem as great to you. Since you haven't invested as much into the characters, but whilst watching that film I could't fault it.

The series is brilliant.

But, as much as I enjoy this trip into the far distant past of my yout', as well as meeting Robby for the first time and Anne's general lack of clothing throughout the movie, I'd have to say that my absolute favorite SciFi film from the period is "The Day the Earth Stood Still".

Thanks for the replies. ESPECIALLY because of Bill's post, I think I'll stay away from the series for a while...probably not until Christmas time.

I can recall the last time when I started watching a TV series...my mind was teeming with the characters, with all sorts of thoughts wandering around in my head...
