browser button lockup anyone?

#1 Post by motownFILy » Tue Sep 19, 2006 6:00 pm

whenever i hit the browser back button while using IE, my T60 locks up. i haven't tried other browsers, but i don't think IE is generating the problem. my lockup symptoms are as follows:

- all keys are nonfunctional except for the Windows key
- Ctrl-Alt-Del brings up the Task Manager but i can't use Task Manager to shut things off; all i can do is log off, restart, or shut down
- restarting solves the problem
- the mouse cursor moves, but clicking is out except for when choosing to log off, restart, or shut down
- the Performance tab in the Task Manager shows no background operations = it's a straight up lockup

my T60 came w/ BIOS 1.09. updating to 1.11 didn't solve the issue. as for now, i've resorted to shutting off my browser buttons. it's no big deal, but doesn' t it just bug that something isn't working even if u don't use/need/want it? thx

Are you using IE6 or 7, and are you wireless when this happens, I had a similar problem and it was my wireless connection (intel) crapping out on me.

Using IE 6, I see no such problem. This might very well be caused by your antivirus or by some other browser add-on. Try to turn those off. You can usually just turn the antivirus off. To disable browser add-ons, record a System Restore checkpoint, then in Internet Explorer, Tools menu, Internet Options, Programs tab, click the Manage Add-ons button.

In the dialog box that appears, at the top choose "Add-ons that are currently used by Internet Explorer". Disable them one by one and check whether you still have the problem.

If this was not the problem, you can restore your system quickly with Windows System Restore. In theory, at least. In practice, I found that using Windows System Restore causes Symantec Client Security to get out of sync with its LiveUpdate. That is a huge mess. I ended up getting rid of Symantec altogether and my system is much faster.

motown, it only does it with a belkin wireless router I have to use at home (no firmware upgrades yet), does not do it on dial-up, or wired.

LOVE that motown sound :)

hmmm, i'm on a Linksys wireless. i think u were right the first time about the problem, kyo. i think the problem is w/ the intel wireless card. i was just hoping someone else has seen this so they can tell me what is wrong. i'm a tad lazy about doing all the troubleshooting myself, especially since every time i reenact the problem, i have to restart the machine.

here's a new development. i just did a whole system update through ThinkVantage and i started getting the same exact lockup symptoms when XP starts up. this time, i have to go to the Task Manager, then close the Task Manager to restore full functionality. so i'm pretty sure my lockup issue doesn't have to do w/ IE, Claudio. i'm reaaly getting the feeling it has to do with the wireless card. however, i'll try it in the name of thoroughness.

i'm also gonna try shutting off the wireless card's Deep-Power-whatever. according to another thread, that feature seems to be problematic too.

anybody reading this, please submit a comment if you've seen this or solved this issue. i hate having to reboot.

When I first got my t60 some months ago I had problems with the intel card, unfortunately a new card and two calls to ibm/lenovo tech support did not help, the machine is great otherwise, I am waiting on driver updates to possibly help this problem.

There are some post's back in this conference about the wireless issues others were having, seems like some say the atheros is better :? . I just use my trusty old t30 at home it's card connects no problemo.

so i tried uninstalling the Keyboard Customizer, installed the latest Hotkey, installed the latest Power Manager (all of these steps needed to install the new Keyboard Customizer), and then installed the latest Keyboard Customizer. to my delight, it worked and i could use the browser buttons w/o locking up the machine. to my dismay, it only worked this very first time, and severely locked up my system the next time i tried it. rebooting didn't even fix it. i had to enter Windows Safe mode to allow it to boot all the way through, and then reboot normally. i think i'm gonna give up on the browser buttons. it's just so [censored] annoying knowing that there's a feature on my system that doesn't work. it just makes me nervous wondering if there's other aspects of my laptop that are tetering on the brink of failure. sigh.

i'm gonna start a poll to see if anyone out there uses the browser buttons and if they've ever had a problem w/ them.

i fixed my problem(s)...AWESOME-O 8) ! so aside from the browser buttons crashing my system, i had a few more random lockups/crashes. i got fed-up w/ it finally and decided to reimage my system with a full hd purge. as soon as i did that, i had full browser button functionality, and perfect system stability. i suppose my T60 didn't like the factory preloaded image on the hd and much preferred an actual install from scratch. in any case, if anybody stumbles upon this thread while looking up lockups or crashes, let me just testify that a full system recovery is my best advice. rock on.

Sometimes that's just what it takes. We try everything else, but our problem cannot be fixed unless we reinstall from scratch. It is just too difficult for users to know what each registry key and its data should contain, and where it is located. If uninstall, reinstall, and registry cleaners do not work, then it may be time to do as motownFILy ended up doing.
