problem creating multiple partitions

I am installing SUSE 9.1 on a T42 with windows XP.
I already have two primary partitions. One FAT for recovery and one NTFS for windows XP. Then I created an extended partition for copying files from LINUX to windows. ( with this I have 3 partitions)

Then I tried to install LINUX , SUSE did not allow me to create a swap partition. It created a root partition. It complains about more than 4 primary partitions. I thought LINUX does not have to be in a primary partition. Am I wrong or missing something. What if I want to create more partitions for say /home /usr etc...

Can some one tell me how to handle this situation? Should I create them as logical partitions in extended partition?

Yep. Just leave the windows and data partitions as primary, create an extended partition and put as many linux parts as you want in it.
