T40 to upgrade with Intel PRO 2200BG? Help needed.

#1 Post by armortec » Fri Sep 03, 2004 7:38 pm

I own a 2379D4U and wish to upgrade the wireless with a B/G wireless LAN.

The parts list here are for T42. Anyone had success with the Intel PRO 2200BG upgrade?

http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.ws ... MIGR-46474

Thanks.

You shouldn't have any problems upgrading to the 2200BG in your T40. I succcessfully changed out the 2100B adapter for the 2200BG in my 2373-72U, you simply need to remove the keyboard and palmrest to access the mini-PCI slot. Make sure you get the card from IBM (Thinkpads won't boot with a non-IBM wireless card installed unless you are willing to alter the firmware)

Once the card is installed, make sure you install the Intel 2200BG drivers and IBM Access Connections (if you use it) from the Thinkpad downloads page. Also be sure to install the latest Hotkey Driver, otherwise your Fn+F5 feature stops working. If you want a really clean install, you can uninstall the old drivers first before taking out the old card.

I have the same machine and read on the IBM site that upgrading to the a/b/g card required a BIOS upgrade? Did you do this? If not, what BIOS do you have?

Thanks :)

My BIOS is 3.06f. But I am wondering if the 2200BG Intel mini PCI wireless lan module can be used for my T40 or not? Thanks.

According to the BIOS version history, support for the 2200BG adapter was added beginning with version 3.00, so as long as your BIOS version is that or later you should be fine. I'm running version 3.08a (dated 8/26/2004) and haven't had any problems.

Support for the IBM a/b/g adapter was added in version 2.02 so again make sure your T40's BIOS version is at that level or higher. Intel just announced their own tri-mode a/b/g card -- IBM will probably need to tweak the T4x BIOS to support that just like the others but this card hasn't begun shipping yet.

Be careful to buy this card from IBM as a regular Intel 2200BG won't be recognized by the bios (error 1802 at boot).

You thought your thinkpad has a Mini PCI slot ? No, it's just an "IBM Mini PCI-like" slot :x

I recently did this with a T40. Unfortunately I had not checked the Bios version first and wound up having to tear it apart to pull the card and upgrade the bios. Works fine after bios upgrade. But upgrade your Bios/embedded controller before putting in the card!

Are you saying the Intel version works with an updated bios? Or that you need an updated bios with the IBM-Intel card?

You need to update the bios with the IBM/Intel 2200BG, the Intel version won't work, whatever bios you have.

There are 2 part numbers for the Intel PRO 2200BG.

93P4168 and 93P4170. May I know what is the best model for my T40 (2379-D6U). Thank you.

i have a t41 2373-8rgb and i have the lates bios/controller updates.
I installed an atheros wistron cm9 minipci card in it (not ibm) and the common problems occured (unable to boot)
BUT when i put the ac power on the laptop is able to boot if you try twice!
if the ac is off the laptop wont boot.
i tried the no_1802.com through DOS from PC-Doctor but with no success when i boot only with battery.
ill try it with pure DOS mode to run 1802.com
