German Keyboard

#1 Post by crazyfrog » Mon Feb 12, 2007 10:40 am

My colleague got a T43 with German Keyboard recently. He doesn't mind the extra keys on the keyboard, but what becomes annoying is the Y and Z keys.

The keyboard has a standard QWERTY format (Not QWERTZ) with a few extra keys for German. First he set the input lauguage as English (United Kingdom), and then he tried to set the keyboard layout/IME to German or German (IBM) to bring the exta German keys into working. Everything seems right except the Y and Z keys. Entering 'Y' just will pop up 'Z' on the screen, and entering 'Z' will get a 'Y'!

Are there any hints to solve the problem of Y and Z keys? Thanks in advance.

The standard german keyboard has the z and y switched compared to an uk or us style keyboard, so if its german it should be a qwertz not a qwerty, so maybe your keys ar wrong.
By pressing the key to the right of the t will bring you a z if you set it to german.
your chance is that its not german but one like the german with y and z right.
Maybe you could try switzerland austria or luxembourg layouts if they exist.

Is just removing and switching them an option? :?

Yes, it should be as simple as that.

Unclenching and swapping Y and Z keys seems to be the only solution.

My colleague has tried several options of German languages (Swiss, Austria, etc). They all assume that the key to the right of T is Z, but actually it is a 'Y' printed on it. Weird keyboard!

Thank you all for the help.

Are you sure it's actually a German keyboard? The Dutch and Finnish/Swedish keyboard layouts are quite similar as well, but still QWERTY.

Maybe if you can post a photo we could take a look ...

It could be a Finnish/Swedish keyboard because Dutch keyboards do not have umlauts. Here is a very good wikipedia page showing different keyboard layouts: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyboard_Layout
