Kingston USB flash drive - no driver - no install
Kingston USB flash drive - no driver - no install
I just bought some 1 and 2 gig USB drives from Kingston - extremely tiny and no parts to lose. Worked fine on my desktop WinXP box. MyT60p does not recognize it and can't find the drivers. Tried another brand, same results. Any thoughts?

After reinstalling Win XP from an OEM disc, my T60 couldn't install *any* USB device properly. I had to download some sort of XP update from Lenovo.com. Too bad I don't remember which one it was. If you are having problem with all USB devices, the same update might fix the problem. For some reason, neither Software Installer nor System Update could download this fix automatically.

miri is talking about the Windows update modules (United States only). You can get that and all other drivers on the following webpage: Software and Device Drivers - ThinkPad T60, T60p
Make sure to read and follow the installation instructions for any download from that page.

It could be one of these, with the second one being more probable:DavidR wrote:On that web site there are a zillion updates. Which one for this problem?

If the links don't work, look up "MIGR-62939" and "MIGR-64133" in the search box at the top right corner on Lenovo's web site.
EDIT: I accidentally copied the same URL for both links. This has been corrected.

Well, I downloaded the file, ran it and updated everything on the list. Rebooted and now the computer hangs during boot while determining the status of the security chip. Went from bad to worse!! Rebooted several times, no help. Disable the chip in BIOS and the PC boots but gives me several warnings.
Oh yes - I get the same error message when running TV System Update 3. Back to square one with another problem on the heap!

Very very strange David,
...it shouldn't affect anything because they are updates from Microsoft that are collected from Lenovo.
Probably the error resides in the entire operating system...why don't you try to restore the full computer to factory default...i know that is very painful, but better to suffer a little now than when you will have a lot of work
Good luck

I don't know why you ran into your latest problem. However at this point I think your best option may be to use Last Known Good Configuration (F8 on boot up) or Windows System Restore to get your system back to the state it was in before you installed the Windows update modules.
As far as your original question, I currently don't have an answer for that.

Well, it was identical to the problem I was having with my T60, and installing that update somehow fixed it for me.GomJabbar wrote:As far as your original question, I currently don't have an answer for that.

David,
I have experienced this twice now. Have done a full reinstallation to factory settings once but the problem occured again after some time.
The thing is that I have so much software installed and there is no telling which is the rotten apple.
There might be a little light in the tunnel though; use the RnR first boot record - if you made one that is - to install drivers. For some reason it works installing usb drivers from there.
Hope this help you.

I have followed this thread with much interest, as this problem has been on my T60p since day one. And I think my answer is in the way I had used the Registry First Aid application. By corrupting and/or deleting the keys used by PnP to identify USB mass storage devices. Any way, I restored my T60p to factory, did NOT use RFA at any time in my reinnstall of all of my needed applications, MS Access 2000, MS Office 2003, Adobe Photo Shop, misc junk. And now the USB 2.0 devices are all OK. All of my travel drives, LaCie 500gb drive, Video Capturer, external DVD writer, mouse. It seems the Memorex traveldrives, and Scandisk cruzer were the only ones to be removed from the computer, the others were plugged into the mini-doc. Does this make sense??

An interesting idea. How do you reinstall drivers without messing up the system or doing a complete install?Chonsk wrote:There might be a little light in the tunnel though; use the RnR first boot record - if you made one that is - to install drivers. well, I guess the system already is a bit messed up. But the idea is to point out drivers that the system cant find - for some mysterious reason. Just search for new hardware in the device manager. in the wizard, point at the D:\ drive, or wherever youre cd driver is, and let it find the drivers. Sometimes you have to do a little bit of searching yourself. I know this doesnt sound all that scientific but...I dont care as long as I get it going
The other way, a complete reinstall, is the last resort. Personally I had to call MS and Adobe to reactivate licenses...again I might add, install vpn, developing environments, setting up mail and all sorts of software.
I wish Lenovo would make their software a little bit sturdier. Hm, there always is the possibility that I messed up someware in there too...naah

I finally got around to trying the RnR disks that I had made back in December 06. I have a CD and a DVD. I tried to install the USB drive using both media (one at a time) to no avail. I hate to do a reinstall because of all the software licenses, etc. but if I HAVE to I will. I'm worried that this will happen down the road again, and again, and again. It sems to be searching for an INF file, which is not there. Is there a generic INF file that might work? Could I perhaps find what I need on my other WinXP Lenovo laptop that does work? If so, whre would I look?

I installed and ran Registry Cleaner on my T60 and one of my X31's and am now having this exact problem on both. Has anyone found a way to recover from this without having to reinstall WINXP?

THANK YOU!!!DavidR wrote:The way I fixed it was to reinstal the driver, pointing to C:\Windows\Inf and it worked.
I've got a 2007-94U, and have been having erratic USB problems for months.... I just finished a complete R&R to factory state, and rebuilt EVERYTHING to current (XP and Thinkvantage tools), a full and complete reinstall, including all apps, regedits, etc.....
I did two disk images (R&R and Acronis), and then double backed up after each step, Systematically cleaning the registry with RFA and backing it up the entire partition after each install ..... I thought everything was working totally fine, till I tried to use a thumbdrive of my wife's.....
Boom, Same old problem... can't recognize the hardware, and failure to install the driver.... suddenly, even a USB mouse stopped working in two of the three ports.....
I was going to tear out my hair, but your solution worked perfectly.... Now I'll call Atlanta and find out about the windoze hot fix's....
Now that everything is totally clean and new.... I'd really like to nail this specific fix down..... but this suggestion absolutely worked

It is a work-around, but it works. Drove me nuts for a while until I had a brainstorm one night while driving home. Course, I've had many "brainstroms" on this issue that did not pan out.
I've used it for usb flash drives, mice, cameras and usb hard drives. There's gotta be a registry entry that points there, but since my laptop is broke, I can't even search for it.

Sorry to hear your laptop is broke......DavidR wrote:It is a work-around, but it works. Drove me nuts for a while until I had a brainstorm one night while driving home. Course, I've had many "brainstroms" on this issue that did not pan out.

This USB issue has driven me nuts for months...... I tried restoring to earlier images --no help....
You KNOW I wasn't happy doing a complete reinstall.... and i Decided I'd never do another one --so I was fricking fastidious..... and I tested MY thumb drives, minidock, external usb drives from the very start of the process...... and every step of the build I double backed up, and after every few big installs (run CAD/Rendering tools)...and I kept cleaning the reg... definitely took everything nice and slow.... and the whole process took about three days.... and I THOUGHT it was working fine... I felt GOOD.... Man, I did this one "right"
Then my wife handed me her thumb drive, and *suddenly* I was back to the identical same problem..... Man-O-Man..... I'm glad I didn't have a stroke....
So this "tip" was a God Send, thanks again... Seriously,
One thing that kinda bugs me..... THE ENTIRE REBUILDING PROCESS I JUST WENT THROUGH WAS ATLANTA'S ANSWER TO THE PROBLEM.... NO KIDDING......
I had called them about this a few weeks ago, we tried the "windows fix" mentioned above.... no good for me at the time, I don't know why (so maybe a clean install was worth it).... after stepping back a few backups and re-imaging the partition.... and trying to delete all the USB drivers --this was their answer.... spend a few days reformating and reinstalling your OS and entire work environment.... even though this was the ONLY problem
I definitely spent time searching through the forum's here for USB related stuff, and I know if I had found this thread earlier I would have saved the three days I just spent NOT solving a problem that your 30 second work-around does.... SO I NOMINATE THIS THREAD AS A STICKY.
Thanks again.... and boy, is my hard drive clean.... shines
