T40 in the depot 5 times

#1 Post by anz2007 » Sun Oct 03, 2004 12:02 am

My thinkpad T40 came back to me yesterday from DHL. I rushed home to meet the driver (who was re-delivering the package). I opened up the laptop, turned it on, and...nothing. No POST, nothing at all. This was after the machine was sent to RAID (a special service group?) because it was the 5th service call in 3 months. Hard drive issues. Now my system came back worse than I sent it in. (On the bright side, I got a fujitsu drive this time, instead of a hitachi. Maybe it will work better?) Anyways, I called tech support, and got transferred to a complaint specialist, who is looking into the problem and is going to call me on monday. I told them I can't keep sending in my computer every 2 weeks for the same problem (after a guy asked me to send it to Memphis AGAIN...) Any suggestions on what I should say to the lady when she calls me back on monday? Especially from someone who's successfully gotten a new laptop from them.

Thanks in advance.

You should demand a replacement, after 5 times your T40 should be considered a lemon. I read on some other forum where someone had a T40 that also had to be repaired several times without success, IBM offered him a replacement, he opted for an X40.
Write a letter or send a e-mail to whomever is the higher up at IBM customer support, also don't give up, be polite but persistent.

Just curious which Hard Drive you have in your T40??? IBM just sent me a T40 as a replacement machine and I was looking at getting a secondary drive and enclosure that I could ghost my HD over to in case of situations exactly like you described. My local service tech informed me that some of the drives were more problematic than others so it would helpful to know exactly what drive and type of problems you are experiencing?

I had a similar problem with an A22p that I had repeated problems with the screen and other components. The complaint department is the best place for you to be talking with at this point. Make sure everything is well documented and always talk to them in a nice calm, constructive manner. They were quite good to deal with and offered me an A30p (2653-64U) replacement for the A22p (2629-UTU I think).

They even offered to cross-ship so that I had several weeks with both laptops to get everything transferred. Also gave me a free Ultrabay floppy drive since the A22p had one and the A30p didn't. Definitely helped me get over some frustrations with the service department.

i had 6! hitachi drives. Finally, they put a fujitsu (i think it is) when I got it this time, but of course, the system itself doesn't work.
