512MB More RAM for the T42

#1 Post by Kenn » Thu Oct 07, 2004 5:57 pm

Corsair Value Select. I worked with them a few years ago and thought they had a good operation, so I "took a chance" and saved a few (small) bucks over Crucial.

$87 free UPS 2-day shipping at ZipZoomFly:

Ordered Tuesday night, just came in. Popped it in, so far so good! It's nice to run 1GB again :)
IBM ThinkPad T42p (2373-7XU): 1.8GHz/1024MB, 15" UXGA, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.
T42 (2374-3VU): 1.7GHz/512MB, 14.1"SXGA+, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.

did i get the right RAM?

Ken,

I followed the link you provided and ordered that particular one just now after looking around for clues to see if it was the right one. I needed a 512MB PC2700 CL2.5 DDR SDRAM for my 23736VU. I think it's the right one. Can someone correct me if I am wrong? I guess I will know in a couple of days, but the anticipation is driving me mad :x . I don't know much about RAM, but what I ordered seems to make sense.

Corsair has a lifetime warranty and it is definitely a better deal than the one on IBM's site which is about twice as much with only 3 years warranty. Also the 2-day shipping is free.

Thanks in advance to whoever can help me confirm that I ordered the right one: http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDe ... e=80059-02

Hi t9,

That's the right one (same one I got and have been running for almost a week now). 512MB 200-pin SODIMM, PC2700 333MHz DDR CL2.5 non-parity.

When you get it, just unscrew the cover on the bottom of the latptop, pop it in, and you'll be good to go.

I'm glad you had a good experience, but I'd never try to save a few bucks by going with anyone other than Crucial.

Crucial has given me better service by far than any of its competitors (near or distant).

Just my $.02

Now I can sleep better. I will report back on how it does when I get it--hopefully by Friday.

Generally good advice for RAM, but I've worked with dozens of RAM integrators and packagers in the last few years, and Corsair (along with many others that cater to high-performance and mission-critical applications) is a class act, in terms of service, QA testing, and R&D.

Personally, I feel the dedication of this board to Crucial, while not a bad thing, lately tends to be driven less by real-world knowledge and more by repetitious dogma. Don't get me wrong, Crucial makes fantastic RAM modules (it's like that old mantra, "Nobody ever got fired for choosing IBM"), but that's not to say that going with anybody else -- for the sole reason that they are not Crucial -- is a foolish choice, a crapshoot, or even presents a slightly higher risk.

Hello,

It took a minute to add my RAM and it was seamless. A fellow computer geek highly recommended Corsair brand RAM. I took his advice because I know he knows his **it from years of good experience with them. I did a search for 'Corsair' and found this thread. The price was just the icing on the cake. I will now see for myself how reliable it really is.

Glad it's working out T9. Chances are (and hopefully) you'llhave no problems - RAM issues are a PAIN to troubleshoot because they tend to manifest in random ways.
