Dual-Link DVI (2560 x 1600) card in Advanced Dock

#1 Post by xaveon » Wed May 23, 2007 11:12 am

Hey Everybody,

Is there a Dual-Link DVI card that will fit in the advanced dock? I'm trying to power two 30" monitors with my T60P and Advanced Dock. Any suggestions?

Something like this should do the trick:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814195013 (ATI 100-505157 FireGL V5200 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card)

You want to make sure you get a card that is single-thick and is half-length. If you look at the card on this link, you'll see that the distance between the edge with the last gold trace and the far right edge is 1 5/16 inches (about 33mm). Those are the cards that fit in the Advanced Dock's PCI-Express expansion bay.

Note that the card can be full-height, that doesn't matter.

If you are looking for a cheaper alternative there is also this one:

For most people FireGL is a waste. The V5200 is actually the same hardware as an x1600. This one has more ram though. I am still looking, but this appears to also work.

Well I just purchased the ATI 100-505157 FireGL V5200 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card as recommend by RonS. I'm just afraid it's not going to fit into the advanced dock. The thing that worries me is that fan.

No worries - I have that exact same card in my Advanced Dock right now.

Hey Ron,

Just got Two 30" Dell 3007WFP-HC. Can't wait to get them and try them out with this card. I have 3x 19" now, so with two 30" I'm basically doubling my screen real estate. What do you think of these Dells?

Another question,

If I'm running an external video card in the advanced dock already, do I even care what video card I have on the T60p? Because the video card in the advanced dock will be driving the two Dells. So I wouldn't be using the internal ATI V5200 card at all right.

Usually the T60p is docked in the advanced dock with the screen closed (I don't use the laptop screen). So if I downgrade to a 14" screen with 128MB ram on the video card does it affect performance at all? Photoshop performance etc.
