What would you choose? T42(p) vs. T43(p)
As I’m currently trying to replace my stolen T60p I need a replacement from similar class, but do not have money to buy T60p again. I would relish laptop with Dothan CPU (I don’t believe speed maters that much), decent GPU to play some games (i don’t need highest quality), and 14.1" TFT display with 1400x1050 resolution (how would simple 1024x768 look?). I understand HDD speed matters a lot, ho much would it cost to upgrade if i would get slower version 5400? Ram – always can buy more (min 1 GB)
So that’s what I want. My question is what would be the difference between T42, T42p, T43, and T43p? What is the real difference between speed and power, I heard that T43’s are hotter, but they include fingerprint scanner (I like that).
Looking forward to your thoughts and recommendations.
Kind Regards

sux about your T60p... i'd cry for days...
anyways, a T42P sometimes can be more than a T43 because they are just so hard to find. T43P is also a good amount too... i don't play games on my PCs so i just wanted something powerful enough to run Vista and i got that with a T42 with an ATI Radeon 9600 64MB. I heard it can run games and decent frames but i've never tried.
Also FYI, my T42 has a fingerprint reader too, they were introduced on this model i think.

I would choose the T43p, it has a better video card, processor with faster fsb , you can pin mod it and using a 400mhz fsb dothan you can exceed the 2.26ghz as for processor speed. Serial ata HD.
And it's newer so it must have more warranty.

The T43/43p uses much cheaper PC2-5300 memory. The T43/43p fan tends to be louder, and there is the 2010 error for unapproved HDDs, but both are fairly minor IMO.

Does the T43p actually use an SATA HD? The regular T43 uses a SATA to PATA bridge chip and use PATA HDs. I've been kind of curious whether it's possible to remove the bridge chip and connect the SATA from ICH6 directly to an SATA HD. From what I can see from the datasheet and SATA pinouts, it should be able to connect directly (only 4 signal wires), but my T43 is still under warranty so I don't want to mess with it (yet).cmarti wrote:I would choose the T43p, it has a better video card, processor with faster fsb , you can pin mod it and using a 400mhz fsb dothan you can exceed the 2.26ghz as for processor speed. Cool idea on the pin-modding! I have done it before and it works great on the Dothan chips I've used in the past, but I never thought about doing it on my T43. That means a P-M 765 could run at 2.8GHz!

Well i have a 1.7ghz running at 2.26ghz, but i believe the fastest cpu that you can use is the 1.8ghz version because if you use the 2.0 or 2.10 version your lappy will become unstable.GnatGoSplat wrote:That means a P-M 765 could run at 2.8GHz!That would be very cool if it could handle it without running too hot.

Anyone in forum wants to get rid of their T43/T43p?
Anyone has been buying these models recently?
How much do you recon I should pay?
What is actual speed diference between T42 and T43?
How faster is memory speed (400/533 MHz FSB - i'm not sure) ? How does it affect performance?
In T42 if could get ATI 9600 64MB is there big diference from ATI Mobility FireGL T2 (I believe it's same chipset - heard it;s faster then x300)
Can anyone shed some light on this as well?
Cheers

I thought T43/T43p uses 512MB or 1GB PC2-4200 memory standard (533).pianowizard wrote:The T43/43p uses much cheaper PC2-5300 memory. The T43/43p fan tends to be louder, and there is the 2010 error for unapproved HDDs, but both are fairly minor IMO.
Even if it can fit PC2-5300 memory is also called DDR2-667 would it make sense as i Dothan can only run 533?

My choice would be a T42p + good upgrades later on. The T43 series run hot and noisy and they have the 2010 HDD issue.
Now: T60 2613-EKU | T23 2647-9NU | 600X 2645-9FU | HP 100LX
Past: X31 2673-Y13 | T41 2374-3HU | T22 2647-AEU

Thanks all of you for your replys.
Gator,
Have you had both? How is the performance difference? having in mind that t43 runs on faster platform and faster memory?

Yes, T43/T43p uses DDR2-533, but you can use 667 with no problems as that is what I am using. In fact, it will run CL4 (4-4-4-12 timing) @ 533. Just buy whatever is cheaper, and at the time I bought my RAM, there were good deals on DDR2-667.nofuture wrote:I thought T43/T43p uses 512MB or 1GB PC2-4200 memory standard (533).

I don't think there is a significant performance difference between T43 and T42. Main benefit is the cheap RAM which is great for Vista. I upgraded mine to 2GB while had I bought a T42, I would have had to stick with 768 or 1GB, whatever it came with.
My T43 gets a little warm on the bottom, but not really anything to write home about. The fan is audible, but quieter than my desktop PCs by far and I can't hear it when the TV is turned on which is pretty much all the time when web surfing on the couch. 2010 error amounts to 2 beeps during startup and a 2-second delay. No big deal IMO. I always put my T43 to sleep rather than shutting it off so I seldom ever have to hear the 2-beeps anyway.
As for price, mine was $544 shipped for SXGA+, 1GB, 40GB HD, Combo drive, no fingerprint, no BT, in mint condition w/warranty, but 2yr old battery. At the time I thought it was kind of expensive since my wife's machine is much more modern (came w/Celeron M but can take Core 2 Duo) and cost less, but it's no Thinkpad.

GnatGoSplat got a really good deal on his T43, they don't usually come at those prices. I have used only a T41, but based on reading a lot of threads here and hearing general opinion, my choice would be the T42/T42p ... As it was mentioned, there is no real-world real performance deifference between a T42p and T43p (unless one of them has a faster HDD, more RAM, faster processor etc).
I see the T43 as a transtion between T4x and T60. It had some good features, but in general, the T43 design could not handle the later high-speeed Dothan processors (which is why you'll see a lot of complaints about its heat and fan noise). For some the noise/heat is no concern, but for some it is a deal breaker. The T43 indeed used PC25300 memory, which is cheapter at the moment. T42p machines are harder to find on ebay though, and they tend to be expensive.
To replace a T60p model (I suppose you bought the 'p' model for the GPU), you should decide between a T42p/T43p ... The T42/T43 do not have a FireGL class GPU (they have only a 32 MB ATI 7500 or ATI 9000 series chips, depending on whether you buy sn XGA or an SXGA+ screen) and won't be a replacement for a T60p.

And to add to that, the T42 also has a ATI Radeon 9600 64MB option (the one i have) which gives you the FULL VISTA AERO experience.gator wrote:The T42/T43 do not have a FireGL class GPU (they have only a 32 MB ATI 7500 or ATI 9000 series chips, depending on whether you buy sn XGA or an SXGA+ screen) and won't be a replacement for a T60p.
The T43 also have faster GPUs too, i think an X300 and X400 were options i think? Not 100% sure but those are even better, still not a FireGL with 128MB of RAM but still good. My Radeon has 64MB dedigated RAM but it can steal up to 256MB of RAM if need from the main RAM.
