Round screw covers

#1 Post by NathanA » Sun Jul 22, 2007 4:03 am

Hey, everybody.

I recently ordered a new T42 complete screw kit (FRU 13R2916) from IBM Parts (still based in Boulder, CO I assume?). It arrived, and has a crap-ton of screws (I'm almost positive there can't be that many screws in a single T42 unit) as well as several different kinds of screw covers, but it didn't include any of the round-style screw covers!!

Was this a mistake or do I need to order something else to get the round screw covers? How can something claim to be the complete screw kit and not include these covers? This is nuts.

Anyone know?

Thanks,

-- Nathan

There should only be (3) to (5) round (oval?) screw covers for a T42, all for the front of the LCD bezel, the number of covers required depends on the LCD size. So, I'd check the LCD misc. parts listing for covers. (bottom of the linked page)

Screw Kit

#3 Post by baisley » Sun Jul 22, 2007 8:25 am

Those kits contain more screws than the t42 has. I have ordered in excess of 5 of them in the last month. They are universal, meaning that they contain covers for other laptops. There is like 3 laptops worth of screws in each bag !

Its important to not reuse the laptop screws due to the nylon coating on the new screws. They prevent the screws from coming loose after assembly. The kits are cheap as well.. flea bay around 12.00 US

baisley,

Thanks for replying, and yes, I already know about the nature of the nylon-coated screws.

However, I think you skipped over my actual question. ;) Did any of your screw kits come with the ROUND screw caps/covers?

Harryc, the 15" T42 has more round caps on the side of the display (the 14" version uses different covers for the side, covers which DID come with this kit). I will take a more detailed look later at the link provided, but suspect that it doesn't say any more than I have already seen in the Hardware Maintenance Manual.

Thanks,

The kit you received is incomplete.

I've got a screw kit that was ordered earlier this year for my T43. FRU 13R2916. DOM 2006-09-25. Inside there's a sheet of 20 round screw covers (along with just about every other screw and cover under the sun for 3 or 4 machines).

Call IBM Parts and request a replacement.

Just for everyone else's benefit here, I was able to finally confirm with IBM Parts that my kit was incomplete, and they are RMAing mine and sending a replacement. You can see a picture here of what the kit should look like (taken by one of their quality control guys).

EDIT: I should add that everyone I talked to over there was extremely courteous and eager to help me find the answers I needed and solve my problem. IBM really is the best when it comes to service. In the end, they told me it was a "low dollar item" and they didn't want my original "defective" set back, so they are just going to ship me a new one (hopefully with the screw covers this time!) free of charge. So now I have a bazillion screws X2. :P
