the southbridge is never really a problem in any laptop. What gets hot is the CPU, GPU and Northbridge. With that said tho, the T43 is generally known to run warmer because of GPU and other components. The hotter CPU doesn't help matters much either.

well,
i have just compared both T43(Pci-X300) and T42(Ati 9600),
T42 only gets warm which is very much comfortable and bearable with it.
but T43 would get "HOT" rather than warm!!!!

Just like the temperature is ready to toast an egg near the southbridge, well, i guess this is the little compensation for PCI-Express X300.

with some members in the forum stated that there is no obvious difference betwenn ATI X300 and ATI9600, the only downside of X300 is HOT, more power consumption which will shorten your battery lasting hrs.

pls share your context and comment.

When doing basic tasks, the X300 idles at about 50C with fan off; And it does get hot [about 81C - 85C with fan on] while playing games such as San Andreas, but you don't want to play them on your lap anyway.

If you want to toast eggs or do other cooking stuff, maybe you should consider buying a Macbook Pro.

Cheers

Wanna know what hot is?

I have a T43p (2668-CE6, with 128MB ATI FireGL V3200 GPU) running Windows XP. While surfing the web with two or three Firefox windows open (each with 10-12 tabs), Thunderbird, one or two simple text editor (EditPad) instances, one or two Office applications instances, Pidgin and one or two Windows Explorer instances, I have seen the temperature spike up to 95C for the CPU and 79C for the GPU with fan running at 4500rpm; all this with CPU usage spikes to 100% occasionally. I have already had the fan changed thinking maybe its not spinning as fast as it should but to no avail. Needless to say this laptop is NOT a "lap top" laptop in fact I can't even touch the bottom panel for more than a few when its that hot.

My other machine, a T42 (2373-3VU, with 64MB Radeon 9600) running Kubuntu with full 100% CPU load gets as high as 79C with fan running at 4500RPM and then quickly cools down to around 40C-45C when the CPU load is taken off.

syedj, I'm sure you can lower your temps replacing the thermal grease on your T43p.

In my T42p the underside of the laptop just below the touchpad gets hot.

My T43 would never reach 80C while surfing the web/running office applications/listening to music etc. Is that the difference between a Pentium 770 and a Pentium 760? I thought the high temperature on T43Ps was caused by the FireGL.. What about a 770 with an X300? Hot as hell too?

A T42 with a low-end Dothan and a 9600 always seems like a good choice if you want a cool and quiet machine. But it'd be much slower as well I guess.

Do Americans actually know how to read Celsius degrees??

Do you mean by using Arctic Silver 5 on the CPU? Will it make a big difference?

Thanks for the tip xtr. Its a work laptop so I have been just putting up with the temperature issues without tinkering too much.

I just happen to have another T43 2668-J2U with an X300 and the same processor as my T43p and it runs much cooler even with heavy CPU load. I also have to assume that the FireGL makes a significant difference.

In my experience the T42 with 1.7GHz Dothan is about 25% slower than the Pentium M 770 (2.13GHz) in a T43. I used ubench benchmarking suit to determine that. Despite the processor speed difference, T43 does have a huge advantage of the faster RAM as well.

Some do :) I personally find Celsius scale more intuitive to use.
