X31 died

#1 Post by barrist » Fri Sep 21, 2007 10:06 am

Well this sucks.

My X31 had worked beautifully up until now. But last night, I went to turn it on, and it wouldn't go. I mean, the battery light (and oddly enough the wi-fi) led came on, but nothing happened, nothing on the screen, no beeps. I had the AC plugged in at the time. I tried it without the AC (just battery) and for some reason it booted into windows , but then suddenly froze. Trying a couple times with and without ac, with and without battery, the farthest i got was into windows for a few minutes and then it would freeze. After a while of continiuous trying, it stopped booting altogether. All i get is the battery led turned on when i press the power button and nothing else. I can hear the vibration and the sound of it being "on" but nothing happens. I'm not sure if the hd itself is even spinning.

I've tried some of the tricks i've seen on here ( hold down power button with no battery/ac) but nothing works

any ideas? or is it dead?

I have the suspicion that something might have got busted while carrying it in my bag; maybe i accidentally bumped it on something maybe.

I'd say the first place to start would be to go in, pull out the hard drive and re-seat the memory module(s) and everything else that fits into a socket (MiniPCI, modem, ethernet, etc.). See if that will at least allow you to turn on the system normally and access the BIOS. If that works, then re-install the hard drive.

I'd check the things Ray mentioned first, for sure. I'd also check that the cooling fan is running. It usually starts up at full speed then settles in during the remaining boot up checks.

Thanks for the replies. I tried to reseat all the modules (ram, network etc).

still no luck

THe fan doesn't turn on when i power it on either. It just does nothing. When i have the hard drive in, i can hear it humming, but thats it.

Hmm.. given that re-seating everything didn't help and the fan doesn't spin up and no error beeps/messages are generated, then I'd have to say that you are looking a a motherboard power or CPU problem. Don't trash it yet since somebody else might have a better idea what's going on (don't have an X31 yet).

Processor is soldered on, not socketed. Can't reseat it either.
You mentioned it only started up off the battery.
Does the battery light come on and show yellow when you power up? Does the laptop smell like something burned (shorted)?

It shows green when powered on..

yes it only seemed to start up when i took the ac off that one time. but even now it doesn't start up in any way.

no burning smell either.

I have my X31 do this and I managed to get it running again.

Here is what I did and the explanation behind the approach: try it as it may work for you as well.

Try this:

- remove battery and disconnect AC
- press and hold power switch down for 15 secs.
- repeat the press and hold about 10 times
- on the last cycle, press and hold the power switch for 30 secs

The idea here is to fully discharge all residual charge in the system by repeated running power cycles.
