Which would you pick? 2.0GHz 2373KTU vs. 1.8GHz Fingerprint?

#1 Post by ssdaytona » Wed Nov 10, 2004 1:19 pm

I considering the following laptops.

2373M3U - 1.8GHz, 512MB, 60Gig, Combo drive, 64MB Radeon 9600, 14" SXGA, 6cell battery, FINGERPRINT.

2373KTU - 2.0GHz, 1Gig RAM, 60Gig, DVDRW, 128MB FireGL T2, 14", 9Cell battery.

It's about a $500 difference. In addition, the 2373M3U has a fingerprint reader. Don't really do much with the computer except surf the web and such.

Get the faster unit and forget the finger print cr^p. There is more than enough security that can be activated without have a finger print reader.

I have a friend who has one and it does not work as advertised and ends up doing it over and over again.

I second Greg's opinion.

Also, if you can, drop the RAM down to what is standard (not sure if that is standard or not), and order more from Crucial.com. You'll end up with more money, and more RAM!

I'd forget about the fingerprint technology and go with the more practical route and get the KTU.

I was leaning towards the KTU. You guys just finalized it. Thanks.

Probably not worth mentioning, but....
I seem to remeber reading a thread here that compared the Fire GL to the MR9600. The MR9600 seemed to do better than the Fire GL stuff... even with half the memory. Nothing earth shattering, but something to consider if you are a gamer. :D

None of my business but if you are only going to surf the web and going to do not so intensive computer use why would you pay such high premium for 2.0 GHz Dothan and FireGL graphic cards?

I would rather divert the value to better LCD screen (15" UXGA) and downgrade processor power to 1.7 GHz Dothan and buy more memory separately from crucial.

Then again that's me :)

actually, I prefer the form factor of the 14" models.

you are right. I could just go with a lower end Thinkpad for web surfing, but the $500-600 difference is worth it for the 2.0GHz processor and 1G RAM. I think. That was the purpose of my initial question.

I think that if you like the 14" form factor you can't go wrong with the KTU...
You'll have plenty of power for all your present and future needs...

The FireGL is slightly underclocked. Nothing a little overclock tool can't change.

Yes, they underclock it and due some other things to the drivers (such as not allowing fp rounding errors to accumulate) to make sure that when you do things like surface-surface intersections that you don't have any pixles that you can "see through" do to these rounding errors and other anamolous things that can happen with OpenGL that improve speed but hurt accuracy.

Do you mind the 9cell battery sticking out of the 14"?
Also 500-600 is not worth .2ghz incrase and 512mb of ram. You can upgrade the ram yourself much cheaper. .2ghz is not a big difference. And if all you will be doing is web surfing..both cpu will be running at 600mhz.

you fail to mention how much you are paying for each one..!?

IMO for what you do, the KTU is overkill..

After much consideration, the KTU is an overkill for all the things that I do. I just might get the M3U model instead.

2373KTU - $3,050
2373M3U - $2,550

Through eBay. I've purchased a T42 from the same guy before. Excellent prices.

thats very nice..

and to be honest, i hate to be self promoting, but, what part of THINKPADS.COM is a mystery..?

while i don't stock the M3U i DO stock the M1U..

and $2550 is not all that bad a price, but i can and do do better for the fiscally challenged customer..

greg..

tell your friend to try registering again..

i grabbed the first fingerprint reader model in the door..
(a 2373N1U)
which has worked without missing a beat since i got it..

it works better than my iPAQ PDA, in fact..

while i don't think its a requirement for some, for many it might be very useful..
AND, it saves typing in a password every time it comes back from suspend..
