Conmee (or anyone): How do I create bootable DVD-ROM?

#1 Post by Mofongo » Thu May 27, 2004 7:54 pm

This is the first time I have ever used a DVD burner. So I tried creating a bootable DVD-ROM using some instructions I found on the web (about how to create a bootable CD with XP and SP1a on it) using the drive in my T42p. I downloaded a boot.img file that they provided, told RecordNow to use that, but I just tried booting from the DVD and I got an error about not being able to boot from device ("code 4"). Then it booted from disk like normal.

So what boot image to I give RecordNow??

Thanks!

Perhaps tell us where the instructions are. Bart's Bart_PE from nu2.nu provides a method to create a bootable CD from XP Pro slipstreamed with SP1. But it creates a .iso file on your hard drive. When you write that out with Record Now, it creates a bootable CD. I did that and it works. Where are you looking?

BTW, if you own the XP Pro CD, then the Bart_PE bootable CD is quite legal for individuals. He worked with Microsoft on this. .... jdhurst

I would like to use RecordNow to create a bootable DVD. But I want to be able to specify the content (i.e. I don't want a straight ISO image that is bootable but also has SP1 on it or something).

Conmee did the following with his new T42:
"Make it a bootable DVD (I did) and you can copy from the factory IBM install the following: C:\I386, C:\IBMTOOLS, C:\DRIVERS, C:\SUPPORT, and C:\VALUEADD"

And I just want to replicate this.

Thanks,

I used CD Creator 7 to create the initial floppy boot image. I created a Windows 98 bootdisk and loaded it up with some utilities. Then I used CD Creator 7 to make the bootdisk image, specified make bootable CD/DVD, and then added a bunch of stuff (about 4GB worth), and burned it. I used the same floppy image I made with CD Creator, and told RecordNow to use the image and it worked also. Just not sure how/if the stuff that comes with IBM is full function and will extract/create a bootable floppy image, or simply import them.

Roxio, Sonic, and Nero all have the ability to make bootable DVDs, at least the retail versions do. :)
