Lenovo U110. Worthy Upgrade To The X61?

What do you guys think? Sexy it is . . . It does come in black, so you don't have to worry about that red top. The call numbers are U110B and U110R for Black and Red respectively. The shiny finish would be a fingerprint magnet, but it does bring with it a needed "eye candy" upgrade.

Way to shiny!...The glare off the thing even in the photo wants me to put on my sunglasses!

I couldn't imagine myself typing on that "mushy" keyboard. There are reasons why Macbook is not popular with the business world.

It doesn't look bad and I can't argue with the weight, but I'd wait for the X200 if only because it'll have a trackpoint.

Thats not bad. The more I look at it the more I like it. It is too shiny though.

No trackpoint, anyone notice? I would be out of place moving from my X60t to that thing.

I don't think they're considering it an "upgrade to the X61." It's not a ThinkPad at all, is it? It's a consumer machine.

Agreed! The keyboard/palmrest look ridiculous with that much gloss. Maybe it's just the photo, but wow...

Some more info.

While it is not an upgrade per say, both units are similarly spec'd (3 USB, Firewire, PC Card Slot), but some things that X61 users have complained about HAVE been addressed!

Namely

WXGA Screen
TouchPad (I like the track point more)

Perhaps the camera could be done without, but the fingerprint scanner has been replaced with Biometrics.

On Lenovo's site, there are other things that Lenovo CLAIMS aren't included on the U110, but at the $1,999 MSRP, I doubt this is really the case. I think it's just a matter of price positioning and marketing.

I'd assume though, that no dock would be available for this unit. Lol. Hopefully, Lenovo will release an X62!!! The processor on the X300 is WAYYY too SLOW!!

The U110 DOES look like a winner.

Judging by the Lenovo website, without the availability of a dock, this thing looks like a no brainer. Great stuff!

That's way too much gloss even for a consumer laptop. I think I'll pass. But might be a good competitor to other consumer ultraportables (if such a thing exists).

For now X61/s is still the gold standard. Till X200, I suppose.

U110 - comparison

#13 Post by rossaj » Thu May 15, 2008 4:26 am

Hi everyone,

I've just bought a U110 in RED for my wife in Hong Kong (about $1700 us equivalent).

I also have an X61 and an X300 (both modified by Zender :) )

I'll let you know how it compares with both the X61 and X300 over the next couple of days... If you have any specific questions, please let me know!! (I wish my X300 had an Xpresscard slot!!)

Cheers,

Alan

Please do go as in depth as you can. I'd love to hear a concise detailed review and comparison of both (or all three) machines. I'm considering selling my X61 for the U110 for the smaller size and better screen resolution.

The inability to really upgrade really bugs me.

It's targeted towards those who want to make a fashion statement. I'll retain my X60s because it's better designed for those who spend a lot of time using a smaller portable computer .. form over fashion.
